They were never made in 14:9. They were always made in 16:9 or 4:3, but were cropped to 14:9 during transmission.

There appears to be a new format in use now. 16:9 with black lines top and bottom - meaning the real aspect ratio is ??:??
Are we being softened up for TVs with the new ratio?

But they are not (strictly) movies films, but TV series. First noticed it with some of those Danish series on BBC4, but now it appears the BBC are making some new series this way. (No I can't remember any examples).

I think I've seen a few like this too, but not as 'severe' as the film format.
I wonder if it's to fit some mobile devices where losing any of the limited space is sub-optimal.
 
It’s far more likely that certain luvvy producers want their output to look more ‘arty’ - like the trend many years ago for applying ‘film effect’ to video based material. Some of it looked simply awful before the technology improved to do it (Casualty being an example - that didn’t last long)
 
That and the fact that producers may aim their material for cinema release as well as TV broadcast/streaming. Let's see how "The Great" is shown when it comes to C4 next year.

That's interesting, thanks. Some of these versions cropped from to 14:9 aspect ratio are still broadcast in that format, eg series 2,3 and 5 of The Insector Lynley Mysteries when shown, I think, on UK Drama. Programme files have black bars to top and bottom in addition to both sides giving sub-SD picture quality.

Courtesy of Corinne Hollingworth IIRR. They reverted it after loads of complaints, but eventually put it back on again.
The vandalism still happens - the repeats of My Family this summer have been bastardised by this evil process. The original was not made like that.

It sometimes happened by accident too.

We were running the BBC1/2 Christmas Day TX backup tapes one year and noticed on the monitor that the ‘main’ version of The Two Ronnies actually going out on air had a rather nasty film effect being applied, where as our copy (the actual tape from which the main had been derived) was perfectly OK. It transpired that the main had been acquired off the tape into the playout server through an ARC that had been accidentally left in film mode. We offered to let Network switch to our good copy instead but they didn’t seem too bothered 😕

Put simply, it is making material that was shot on video look like it was shot on film instead by post processing it. Shooting on film is an expensive process, so if you want your programme to look like film but can’t afford to shoot on film then applying film effect to cheaper video shot material instead is an alternative.

Without going into too much techy detail, it comes down to things like the different frame rates that film and video are shot at, and how movement is ultimately rendered on screen. Film effect can also add in things like artificial film grain which would never have been present on video sourced material.

The upshot is that you can end up with something that (to my eyes) looks more ‘distant’ and ‘documentary’ like, but often unconvincingly so compared to shooting on film in the first place.

A different approach to removing old Simpsons programmes might be to use the "dedup" package. With the following "series.info" it will rename your programmes to S01-01, S01-02 up to S31-22. Then you can just sort the programme list alphabetically and easily select all the "S01-" episodes and delete them.

However this does rely on the broadcaster using the exact same text for the title of the programme in the "info" text. When they use a different spelling or wording you can always update the "series.info" file with an extra line (you can have multiple lines that point to the same episode number, see the first two lines in this example).

My kids have stopped watching Simpsons now therefore most of this file is untested. I've updated it with the latest entries from the Wikipedia list of episodes. I didn't type it by hand! I have a perl script that can help with turning such web pages into "series.info" style files. (I'll start a new thread about this script later today.)

Indeed the version archived from Hulu that I saw in the wild had slim letterboxing consistent with 2:1 = 16:8
 
I had a similar situation but multiple copies of programmes that keep getting broadcast, I wanted to identify which recordings were duplicates

The first process for me was to use [ sweeper ] to file recordings based on age, so as [ Silent Witness ] was previously broadcast at the beginning of the year, I set a [ sweeper ] rule to identify which month, then do further sorting as needed

I find the dedupe process renames recordings which does not suit by needs
 
I took a look at IMDB and found the following, (there have been some glitches in processing episodes, usually punctuation and the use of '&' or 'and')

The Simpsons broadcast ratio format (it's being taken that up to the start of series twenty, all episodes were broadcast the same at S20, Ep1, there were changes to how the sound was broadcast, but this is for aspect ratio)

Series 20 Ep 1 - Runtime: 21 min, Sound Mix: Dolby, Color: Color, Aspect Ratio: 1.33 : 1
Series 20 Ep 21 - Runtime: 21 min, Sound Mix: Dolby, Color: Color, Aspect Ratio: 1.78 : 1

Series 22 Ep 1 - Sound Mix: Dolby, Color: Color, Aspect Ratio: 1.78 : 1

Did a bit of editing on the series.info file (by the way, where can they be found)

There are two resulting files, the first ending in S00, puts each episode based on the episode's title being in the synopsis in its applicable series sub-folder, so a twenty-one episode series would/should have twenty-one episodes

The second file, ending in S00, Ep00, puts each episode based on the episode's title being in the synopsis in its applicable series sub-folder, so a twenty-one episode series would/should have twenty-one folder each with one episode

If it turns out that each episode folder has more than one episode, it means you have more than one copy, recorded at different times

There are certain requisites that need to be met, this rule needs to be placed in a folder named [ The Simpsons ], the system needs to be set to do auto decrypt and auto shrink
If this rule is the only rule on the Humax HDR Fox T2, there must also be a rule at [ /media/My Video ]
The Custom Firmware and Sweeper need to be installed, not sure what else would be needed

To use the files, only one file can be active at one time, open the file in a text editor, copy and paste the file in the [ Text Editor ] window of the [ Sweeper Rules ] window

lcn 4 = Channel 4
!flag ODEncrypted = Not Encrypted
flag Shrunk = File is Shrunk
synopsis {Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire} = Synopsis has the episode name
/media/My Video/The Simpsons/S01/Ep01}} = Folder where the results are placed

It may be necessary to split the file(s) into smaller blocks to process fewer series/seasons
