Is dtr-t2100 faster than hdr-fox t2?

My fox-t2 appears to be on its way out and needs replacing.

Is the dtr-t2100 faster or a downgrade?

I'm not fussed about custom firmware anymore

It's not the same kind of beast. If you want a HDR-FOX-like thing it would be a HDR-2000T, or maybe FVP-4000T.

Thanks, my dad has the hdr2000t though and that's much slower than my old hdr fox t2.
The 2000t takes ages to turn on and suffers picture freezing during signal interference (common problem).

A read through this section of the forum will tell you what people think of the DTR range.

Something is wrong here. Some of the HDR-2000Ts navigation functions when in the guide are very much faster than the last few software versions for the HDR-FOX T2.

With power saving on (which is the default) the following are my start up times from full stand-by for some units to get the sound and picture:
HDR-FOX T2 - 24 seconds
HDR-2000T - 40 seconds
DTR-T4000 - 61 seconds
DTR-T2100 - 114 seconds
DTR-T1000 - 147 + 6 seconds (there is a sound blip a few seconds after start up).

With power saving deliberately turned off:
HDR-FOX T2 - 24 seconds
HDR-2000T - almost 4 seconds
DTR-T4000 - 3 seconds
DTR-T2100 - 5 seconds
DTR-T1000 - 3 seconds

(edited Jan 2017 to add DTR-T1000)

I find the HDR-2000T relatively poor for weak signals. Also the auto-tune function is not as good as the HDR-FOX T2 at storing from the correct commercial multiplexes and will store those on the lowest frequencies even if those are weaker or will result in the HDR-2000T getting confused and not recording all programmes.

At least on my recorders the DTR-T2100's tuners are a lot better than the HDR-2000T's but not quite as good as the original HDR-FOX T2's with horizontal placed tuners.

It may be that the HDR-2000T is not tuned into the strongest signal and that this is why interference is more noticeable.
At least on the HDR-2000T you can easily manual tune to be sure of what you are tuned into.
On the DTRs there is no manual tuning.

Whether you would find a DTR-T2100 a downgrade or not will depend on the features and detail that you are after.

Despite the DTR advertising having all the catch-up players it lacks many features of the HDR-2000T. Whether that is a downgrade or an upgrade for you only you will know.

If you do decide that the fewer featured DTR is for you then you could consider the DTR-T4000 as that is faster than the DTR-T2100. Compared to a DTR-T2100 the downside of the DTR-T4000 is its fan noise. I can always tell whether the DTR-T4000 without looking at it. Despite its fan my DTR-T4000 also gets easily noticably hoter than my DTR-T2100 and so I presume that when switched on it is costing more electricity.
Presumably you are aware that the DTR-T2100 is not sold truly 'new' with a gurantee as the DTR-T2100 is the model number which is put on units destined for BT customers. The retail version is the DTR-T2110 and comes in a prettier box as well as saying 'DTR-T2110' on the underside instead of 'DTR-T2100'. The DTR-T4000 is also not intended for retail but is obtainable from similar sources as the DTR-T2100.
