ITV1 Failed Recordings

If I leave the Humax on BBC1 for a while the EPG gets fully populated, i.e through to next Wednesday. Switch to ITV1 and chunks of it go missing. So I guess there's still something amiss on the D3&4 mux's data stream.

Edit: HD MUX seems to be OK as are the other 3 muxes.
Top info!
One of my parents 3 T2’s was awake in standby. The epg was empty for next Wednesday. Tuned it to BBC 1 HD and 10 mins later Wednesday was populated.
I will set all their boxes to do something on BBC 1 each morning and see how it goes.
Thank you TimK2015.

What staggers me is how many people seem to prefer watching/recording SD content rather than HD content.
ITV's seeming general incompetence doesn't really stagger me.

I am having the same problem with my machine. I know a few others with various Humax boxes, both youview and freeview variants, and all are having issues with the channels on the D3+4 (PSB2) mux.

We are tuned to the Belmont transmitter and this only seemed to start in the middle of last week. My work-around has also been to record ITV, C4 and C5 programmes on 103, 104 and 105 HD versions. All other mux seem to work so seems to be a D3+4 epg problem. Film4 is also on this mux in our area - and has no HD version, so is still a pain. I've also found now/next is often wrong on that mux.

I've contacted Humax to try to explain the problem, but they are just telling me the usual reset/retune stuff that makes no difference. I've given them more specific info detailed here - but they are just suggesting resets and 'padding' and don't seem to understand the actual problem. I'm hoping it is a temporary broadcast issue that will be fixed.

I'm so happy to have found this site. I thought it was just my unit initially, and I was having the dreaded hard drive failure. I nearly bought a new box!

I know there are a lot of clever people on this site who will know what the actual problem is. I am assuming nothing we do to the box will work and we have to wait until the epg data on that mux is fixed?

I generally do (when I remember) Owen, but on that same mux there is Film4, E4, ITV2 and 3 and many others I sometimes use that don't have an HD version.

Why would you knowingly record the SD versions in preference to HD?
If this wasn't an HDR-FOX-T2 thread I would suggest:
1) maybe trying to record ITV's local news eg. Central News East not available in HiDef:
2) trying to save the recording for transfer to PC - on more recent Humax models saving HiDef isn't easy if possible;
3) you've managed to save your HiDef recording but your computer is so underpowered you can't edit the adverts out or watch the recording on it.

My parents say when I do an SD to HD comparison, and I quote “I don’t see any difference”.
It drives me nuts!!!!!!!!

We on this forum are probably not the average viewer.

Then they need one or more of:
  • New glasses
  • Cataracts removed
  • A larger TV
  • Don't sit at the far end of a very large room
I also find the sound quality is better on the HD channels even when played in stereo at my parents. And at my house I have a surround sound system so on the BBC HD channels and C4 HD I can use the 5.1 sound when it is in the broadcast, which is pretty much always for films and foreign import shows.

My advice: don't. We know far more about this stuff than them.

Pretty much, although if you read up about such things as custom firmware you'll find a variety of work-arounds and preventative measures. See the links in my sig panel (the footer to this post).

Including me. I don't need it (frankly, nobody needs it). It consumes more "bandwidth", and I'm not really concentrating on it anyway. I do not need to see every wrinkle on Michael Macintyre's face. If I really wanted stunning pictures I would go to the cinema or go UHD (but that comes with investing in fast Internet...). Explain to me how wathing snooker is enhanced by being able to see the nap of the cloth.

Don't under-estimate how much sight deteriorates with age, there may be developing cataracts etc etc etc. And when they say "any difference" they probably mean "not enough difference for you to be making a fuss about". If you really can see a substantial difference, either your eyesight is superb, the TV is huge*, or you are sitting far too close to it.

* Mind you, Tesco are currently selling a 55" UHD smart TV for £250 on Clubcard.

It drives me nuts!!!!!!!!
Why? It's their house, their TV, and not up to you how they want to lead their lives regardless of how much better you think it could be. You should be accommodating to their wishes, not irritated by them. Live a day in somebody else's shoes...

The EPG goes stale if the unit is left turned on without channel changes. My units are left on, and have reminders set for the very early morning to enforce channel changes. If you deliberately receive from more than one region (eg England and Wales), you need to set the reminders to include both (for about 20 minutes at a time). These reminders can also be used to subvert the OTA search at 04.30.

I agree. In fact I was trying to work out how to put it without sounding irritated at the people who are irritated - honest, guv.:).
Oh, and by the way, I don't record HiDef very often and only watch it if I remember. (One TV allows the swapping of channels 101→1 etc. My Humaxes and other TV don't).
