Unnecessary quoting just pads out a thread and makes it more difficult to read. A reader is forced to check the flow of the thread when reading each individual thread. Some forums have etiquette guidelines that suggest to keep quoting of parts of the previous post to a minimum.
There is a small risk that someone else might type in a reply before you do but it is not a great effort to then edit your reply and add a quote should that happen.
