I noticed this is also the case with the 'book now' messages you get on trailers. I used it for the first time last week and noticed that it did not give the option to record the series. I then tried to go and change the booking to a series and found that you can't. I had to delete it and then search for the programme (I had not noted the day or channel it was on as I used the book now feature) and book the series.
Personally I have never wanted to record a single episode of anything. If it's worth watching then it worth recording (I watch everything recorded except the news) and if it's worth recording one episode it's worth recording the series, I can always delete it if I decide I don't like it.
