Power On Channel Incorrect

I have two HDR-FOX T2's which are almost identically setup. One of them has stopped powering up with the selected channel in POC package. Unit always switches on with Red Button channel. I have "Disable-OTA" and "Disable-DSO" installed and also "RedRing". RedRing has not worked correctly for ages, indicating switched on but there is no display so I assume in the half-sleep state. Disable OTA selects Red Button during the night to prevent updates (I think that's how it works) and wonder if RedRing is preventing switch off after this event so the POC remains Red Button rather than what I choose in the POC package. My other unit seems to work perfectly okay and all packages are the same on both units (except for remote scheduling which is not installed on the one that works okay. Specs for faulty unit are:

WebIF 1.2.2-8
CFW 3.02 (build 2295)
Humax Version 1.03.12

Does anybody have any suggestions to fix this issue please.....................?

The Red Button channel is a consequence of the disable-ota reminder reservation, as a fall-back protection against any OTA events which might slip through the net.

It sounds like your errant HDR has some configuration issues. It could be that it is never going to sleep (see Things Every... section 18 - click). What does it say in the activity log (WebIF Diagnostics)?

Some of the packages might need fixing too.

I could uninstall related packages and re-install which may fix the issue? There's nothing untoward in the logs apart from the fact that there are no boot messages since 04 March, see below..........

No boot messages is exactly the point. Turn your unit off (standby) and see if it actually shuts down - see previous link regarding power states.

There are better ways to diagnose and fix... one step at a time please.

It is certainly true that the unit is not switching off. I appreciate that one step at a time is a good way to work on this and of the following common reasons for this, some I can discount:

  • Power On / Power Off Timers are mismatched (ie one is set but not the other); I'll recheck this but can't see where it could have occurred.
  • There is a corrupt recording present (the fault vanishes when the offending file is deleted or moved out of the My Video folder, but may not return if the supposedly offending file is reinstated - indicating it might actually have been a file system error); I've not noticed any corrupt recordings anywhere although I do have a lot of unwatched programmes.
  • There is a mismatched set of files in a recording, when a .hmt file is present with no corresponding .ts file or with a zero-length .ts file (as can occur if an AR recording fails); I will check this but I cannot remember any AR failures in the past.
  • The HDR-FOX is in the "delete loop" fault state (see section 10); This is not the case.
  • Immediately following a cold start (this is normal, and not a fault state). I haven't cold started for a while so will start with this when I get the time to investigate this issue.
I'll report back anything I find but before I start all this, there is an option in diagnostics to "fix flash packages". Is this worth running after I've checked all the above and before I uninstall packages to re-install?

No power up happening, therefore no power-on-channel happening.

It can't do any harm to try that now (it won't cure your delinquent half-awake though), although I don't think it will help in your circumstances.

Here's what I've found so far with some success but I'll not shout "Hurrah" until tomorrow and when I've had a chance to see how it behaves after disable-ota has run. I did a cold boot with no success; unit powered back up in same state (half-delinquent). Using the media browser in Web-IF I looked through all files searching for an anomoly and I found an empty folder which was indicating 15 files within. I looked at the folder via TV browser and it looked normal and empty (it was a series recording folder waiting for next file). Using TV browser, I deleted the folder (via OPT+ and "delete"). I then emptied the re-cycle bin and switched off using remote. Lo and behold for the first time in ages, it de-powered with the ring indicating amber correctly. I'll see how it behaves after a couple of days and report further.

Finding anomalies like this is much easier with the Samba package installed and looking at it from a PC.

Okay the box still powers down in delinquent mode after the disable-ota early morning schedule. I've looked through all media files from a PC and have found an issue in one folder where there are many episodes of a series that haven't yet been watched. One recording in this series has one of the sidecar files missing, specifically xxxxx.thm - the other associated 2 sidecars are present. As missing sidecar files is known to cause this problem, is there a way round this because it is likely to be a whil;e before we get round to watching this particular series. And why is it likely to have happened anyway????????

There is a Custom Firmware package called 'Sidecar' that generates *.nts and *.htm files for a *.ts file, but not a *.thm as far as I know, the *.thm file may be generated when you try to view the *.ts file, It's worth trying to view just the first few seconds or so to see if the file is generated

The .thm is not important (the thumbnail image that gets displayed on the media list). Any missing .thms are generated on boot, or when the recording is played, or via the WebIF thumbnail generator.

Thanks for the explanation regarding .thm files. I think I've now exhausted the common reasons for this scenario. I've looked through all files and all sidecars have the respective .ts present, there are no zero length files and all seems correct. Not sure what else I can do. Unit works perfectly well otherwise, never misses a recording, but it doesn't shut down fully after "disable-ota is run except from remote. WebIF reports unit "In Standby" but network port is active, "RedRing is dim blue and HDD can be heard spinning. It now powers up with correct POC however.

The WiKi has some info. on the half awake state HERE, however I think you have already covered all the possible causes detailed there

Use Telnet (instructions on the wiki) and the Linux command line interface to move your whole recording set out of My Video (into a temporary directory that will not be scanned by the Humax processes). If the unit then shuts down OK you will have proved the problem is in the file set - not because of missing sidecars but because of a corrupt ts or sidecar somewhere.

Assuming that is the case, you can then transfer half the recordings back to where they should be, and if the instability returns you know which half the problem is in, etc...

I did this once, but found that after all the recordings were moved and moved back the delinquent state had cleared.

If Telnet is too much of an ask for you, it can be done with an external drive and the SUI, but it will be much slower.

Something you could try quickly: WebIF >> Diagnostics >> DLNA Server >> Reset DLNA Database. (I think the DLNA server has to be turned off first, but I'm sure the reset attempt will tell you if so - SUI: Menu >> Settings >> System >> Internet Setting >> Content Share = Off.)

I've reset the DLNA database but can't tell if there has been any effect until tomorrow morning. If so I'll report back here, otherwise it'll be some while before I can investigate further.................
