Recordings no longer playing properly/"! The channel is scrambled or not available"

Hi there,

My parents are currently having an issue with their 1TB Humax HDR-FOX T2 following a 3/4 week break away. The unit was left plugged in and attached to the aerial so that it could continue recording while they were away. On return, they found that programs that should have recorded didn't record and only programs recorded on the day they left actually recorded. Also programs recorded on the day they returned did record, however they were pixelling during playback and occasionally cutting to black screen then playing again.

On interrogating the box and logging into the webif control panel I noticed that it'd been upgraded and now included an icon for mobile version. Following some brief online troubleshooting I went down the route of doing a hard disk check using the fix-disk command. After logging in via telnet I tried the command and found it wouldn't work, after a brief check I realised that the command was only available with a firmware after 2.12, so I downloaded the latest firmware (2.14) and updated the DVR before retrying playback of the recordings - no change, same problem.

I then ran the full disk check via telnet, restarted the box into normal mode and got my parents to attempt playback again. The situation had improved slightly - not stopping/pixelling as regularly but still doing so at varying points throughout playback.

Right, that's the background. Basically what's happening is the following :

Old recordings (prior to my parents going away) - Start playing then part way through will stop, almost as if paused (freeze framing) with the image remaining on screen, and then the screen goes black and the message "! The channel is scrambled or not available" comes up. This will continue througout the playback. Many of these recordings have been watched before with no problems what so ever.

Bittorrent downloads/non-recorded videos -Start playing then will freeze then carry on playing - though to a lesser extent than the old recordings.

New recordings (since parents going away/since return) - Start playing then will pixel / go to black screen at varying points throughout playback, also the screen goes black and the message "! The channel is scrambled or not available" appears for a second or two before playback continues.

On closely listening to the box, no abnormal hard drive noise can be heard (re-read clicking or constant "click of death" clicking).

The aerial signal on all recorded channels are fine with no pixelling while just watching TV via the Humax.

Also while using the remote control, carrying out simple tasks such as changing channel is very sluggish, sometimes taking several seconds before actually changing, whereas other changes are instantaneous.

Can anyone shed any light on what this problem is or any further diagnostics that can be done to shed any light on the issue.

Have you run "hard disk" option on webif maintenance panel (it's a button half way down the panel).
This will perform a disk check (without altering anything on the disk itself).

It will tell you if the disk is ok.

I suggest you paste the result into your reply if it fails the test or shows anything that looks like an error. I'm sure an expert will then tell you if it's a disk problem (eg af123 when he next logs on)

Not sure I'm an expert, but it does look like an Hard Disk problem, as you got some improvement after a fix-disk. I would run fix-disk again, as a 'second pass' so to speak can find more errors. As suggested, it would help if you could post the results of the second fix-disk run

There should be a fix-disk.log available too if you want to review or post the results of the first run.

Thank you for the quick replies!

The SMART status log is showing two errors, one on OFFLINE_UNCORRECTABLE and the other one on CURRENT_PENDING_SECTOR. I'll login later this evening via telnet and attempt repair and re-allocation using smartctl and come back to you with the results.

If the sector in question is being used by part of the firmware (custom or otherwise) that would explain both the pixelling/blacking out and the sluggish response so hopefully it's just a bad sector that won't automatically repair.

If it solves the issue, I'll post full instructions on how to repair the problem for anyone else that experiences the same problem :)

If you think your existing recordings are a lost cause, you might as well go straight for a reformat (available on the Humax menus). It's what customer support would recommend.

We don't believe the recordings are a lost cause, mainly as the pixelling/stopping is happening on recordings that were previously fine AND they're stopping/pixelling at different points each playback. I think the suspected "bad sector" which showed up on the SMART status screen may well be the cause, I'll post my findings as soon as I've had a chance to check!

Right, have ran fix-disk twice in succession plus have attempted repair on both noted errors (see below) using smartctl :

Ran "smartctl -t offline /dev/sda" for the offline_uncorrectable
"smartctl -t long /dev/sda" followed by "smartctl -l selftest /dev/sda" to get the LBA of the bad sector and "dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sda bs=4096 count=1 seek=37821812 conv=noerror,sync" to copy the bad sector contents (for current pending).

Unfortunately they didn't fix the issues.

A quick google search pointed me to this post - sysmon-slows-hdr-down-so-replay-drops-out.2231/

It appears the problem may well be the same, so I renamed the file in question (as it turns out, my sysmon wasn't working correctly either, I just thought it was a bug with the new firmware so didn't take any notice of it) and reinstalled the package. Now sysmon is working correctly, I just need to touch base with my folks and see if that has solved the playback issue or not!

However I've still not been able to mark that block as bad and repair the disk - any ideas?

Your maths to find the problem disk sector looks wrong.

for LBA 809774301, partition start 2104515, FS block size 4096, disk sector size 512

I get 100958723 and not 37821812 (relative to the start of the partition). You also wrote to the raw disk device rather than raw partition device - might have been intentional but you would have needed to use different parameters and take more things into account.

Check my maths and then try:

Your maths is correct (see post 9) As that is the block address in relation to the start of /dev/sda2. 37821812 was a typo (I copied and pasted the command straight from an example to save time). The actual LBA I used was 809774301 which is correct for /dev/sda as the device. Also dd isn't partition sensitive (I've been using the extended package gddrescue for hard drive recovery for close on 3 years now so I'm sad to say I know the syntax by memory!). The command can be run either way, as long as dd is aware of what input/output device you're referring to - either logical or phyical.

I actually ran the self same command you just wrote after I'd ran debugfs in order to overwrite the bad block with zeros - same message, no dice!

As it turns out, playback appears to now be working correctly though programs recorded since the problem occurred appear to be corrupted, my folks are recording something/playing it back at the moment to test to make sure that recording is working correctly now, however we still want to sort marking this block as bad so that a full check can be run to see if there are any other bad blocks/signs of a failing hard drive.

Any other ideas?

Just for the benefit of anyone else stumbling across this thread, you can't just substitute /dev/sda for /dev/sda2 in the command. The first one needs an offset from the start of the disk whereas the second needs one from the start of the partition. Either works as long as you calculate the offset correctly. (I know you know that but I'm not sure it was clear).

You moved the monitor.db aside so it will still point to the same blocks on disk - have you tried using dd to overwrite that file with zeros?

The disk firmware has marked a sector as suspect so trying to write to that sector should trigger it to mark it as fine or reallocate it. I can't explain why that isn't happening here unless the LBA being picked up in the self test isn't the one that's marked as suspect. Maybe try running another disk scan now you've written to that block.

Your posted results don't show any errors, however there are two lines missing that can show up problems e.g. lines 197 and 198. If you want to carry out more disk testing I suggest you do a fix-disk, See notes HERE, you need options 1 for Maintenance Mode and 1 for Fix-disk

That indicates a problem with a sector on the disk. You need to run a disk self test - running the HDD test from the Humax menus should be enough and then the bottom section of the webif diagnostics screen should tell you which block has the problem.
