I've considered Freesat over the years and would have bought a Foxsat HDR to get custom firmware despite its age and slowness. But it seems likely now that satellite will shutdown (whether Freesat or subscription) before Freeview so I don't see the point of changing at this stage.

I used to have the Humax Freesat recorder a good few years ago but I ended up hardly using it when I got the HDR T2 so I passed it on - it worked very well but it was so painfully slow I used to get annoyed with it!

From what I have read there still should be a few years left in Freesat and at least that would give some breathing space to see exactly where Freely and all the conspiracists in broadcasting are heading!

I've noticed that near me, where a number of new housing estates have been built, there are hardly any visible aerials. There are a few satellite dishes. Most houses have no visible TV reception method. That would suggest most are using broadband for their TV reception. Excellent candidates for Freely. :(

Probably like ours, the aerials have to be installed in the loft as external aerials are not allowed as part of the TP1 we all sign upon purchase.

Or like mine where there is no gable end and installing an external aerial would be difficult. I have a huge aerial in my loft that I put in.

Poor sods - luckily the signal from Mendip is so strong here I make do with a bit of wet string :o_O:

Where I grew up we could see the base of Emley Moor 3 miles away from the bathroom window. Our reception was terrible because there were so many ghost images. I know how to deal with that now but back then I had no clue. It did mean we could receive teletext with no aerial lead plugged into the TV.

I have found to jump a four minute break I press and hold and count three jumps then let go as it does one extra one when I let go.
Play controls are becoming more and more important for me as I seem to grow more and more impatient with ads, crappy talk etc. This long press business seems quite flakey.
If you've been watching for say half an hour and you decide to record, can you go back that half hr and record from there?

The simple answer is "yes".
A plus is that it will stop recording at the same time as a scheduled recording would have, i.e. if the broadcaster is using AR the recording end will use that.

If the programme you are interested in has finished its broadcast you will not be able to record it from the buffer.
You will be able to rewind (at 30x speed) to rewatch it.

You can just press the record button if the programme that you are interested in hasn't finished broadcasting yet and you are watching live.
Providing you are watching live, Just pressing the record button will record from either the point at which you switched to the channel, or 1 minute before the scheduled start of the currently broadcast programme, which ever is later.
Even if the recording is made from the start, the box will always give a warning that some of the start of the programme may not have been recorded.

I can confirm what @Luke has said above.

I did a quick test this morning whilst watching breakfast TV. We had watched 20 minutes of the live broadcast, pressed the Record button and it recorded from that point plus everything that was in the buffer.

What happens if you rewind to beginning of buffer then press record.
If the programme is called "Interesting" and its end time has been and gone then the message will be displayed:
"Interesting has ended and can't be recorded"

Thanks. That might annoy a little. Can't say how often though.
It could be more often than at first it appears to be.

If you had paused earlier, then unpaused, you might not realise that the programme has finished when you decide to record.

What is nice about the recording from the buffer, is that when you can record it uses AR, if available' to end the recording and not the planned schedule.

Overall I prefer the HDR-FOX T2's ability to record from the buffer.
