I'm wondering if youtube-dl could be made into a Custom FirmWare package

It's already done. There is a long-standing problem with the upload server though to get it into the repository.

af123 has fixed the repository problem and the youtube-dl package is available now.
Credit for all this goes to /df . I just packaged it (tweaking slightly to make it easier).
Run as e.g.

humax# youtube https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b09p1jkt/bbc-weekend-news-28012018

(It was the shortest recent thing I could find to test.)

I've been using 4k Video Downloader. It's a free programme for Windows, Mac and Ubuntu. It has to be simple for me to use and its as easy as pasting the youtube link into the programme. It works for me.

There are plenty of options when it comes to downloading to a PC of some sort, but this is for downloading using the HDR-FOX.
