Second Hand Disk SMART stats

Ok! All Done!
The programmes have have been copied across. On SMART Data after all that the "Reallocated_Sector_Ct" has not budged (yet!) and is still at "8".

It was handy as this also copied across all the Sweeper, Auto-shrink and AdDetect flag files too.
Roughly copied about 1 Gigabyte/min using a USB HDD caddy (you can work out the times given the folder sizes roughly how long it'd take).

Thank MartinLiddle for the info on your HDD. I'm guessing I'll be fine.

To be honest I was not sure. I imagined it would go up, and was not sure how bad that would be.
A few reallocated sectors is not a problem; on a 1TB drive I would say that you might start to worry when it is approaching 1000 reallocated sectors. Our original 1TB drive started to reallocate sectors at a slowly increasing rate after a couple of years. It was still usable after a year but the rate was increasing such that you would get a blip on playback several times an hour which began to get irritating and it was replaced when the count of reallocated sectors reached about 1400. Of course it is a bit of a lottery as if the marginal sectors are recorded data then losing a sector of data is not critical; however if they store file system information it is much more likely to cause problems requiring fix-disk.
 
Ok.... I've gone and done it again. With all the talk about 2TB upgrading, I saw another bargain I could not resist for a 2nd hand 2TB drive. So I took a punt and got it for £35.
It arrived yesterday. Plugged it into the USB caddy and to the hummy. Unlike the 1TB drive I got recently, much lower "Power on hours" figure (approx 52 days on) and zero "Reallocated sectors" and "High fly writes". Summarized SMART data below:

Next stop..... Following the 2TB Wiki again and migrating all the video data across from the 1TB drive.
Should take about 7 hours for the whole job (i.e. swapping drive out and doing the file copying at CLI using the OS, reloading all the extra present WebIf packages).
 
All done. The difference this time was that the new drive was prepared by using it in the USB caddy.
(Had to watch very carefully not to confuse /dev/sda with /dev/sdb! Once false move and all recorded media would have been wiped!)

When the drives were switched over then it was a case of reloading all the packages in Webif and then copying across the video files (preserving date stamps).
Was kind of surprised to see the High Fly writes move from zero to 5 during all the copying activity. We'll see how this piece of 2nd hand goods performs over time.
 
You could have just copied the /mod hierarchy from the old drive to the new drive.
Aaaarrgh! I had a feeling I could do that but didn't want to chance it.
Ah well... it didn't take long to get everything back, and also I now know that for next time. Thanks.
 
You're right, it doesn't take long and in my view it is better to set everything up from scratch (jettisoning any unneeded stuff) again anyway.
 
In the old /mod folder I saw references to the old hard drive. That stopped me from just copying it over.
