Stuck on Deleting Loop and can't work out how to use Telnet

Is the command prompt the "Please select option:" bit when I reconnect and get the "Maintenance Mode Menu"?

No, you have to obtain a command prompt using the "cli" menu option. "Please select option" means choose from the presented list of options.

LBA 0 faults generally means you're stuffed.

And before I go to the command line and type the command "smartctl -a /dev/sda", should I cancel the disk repair?

I would give you a copy of the output, but it keeps telling me that "You are not allowed to post external links yet." when I copy and paste the results here.

I really am bad at this tech stuff...

Just edit out all the rubbish and provide this table (complete though!):

There's your answer. Stop the repair process and attempt to backup anything you want to try and preserve immediately. Do not attempt to write to it.
You need a new disk. This one might fail catastrophically at any time.

Having restarted the box, I've deleted any scheduled recordings and it seems I have no access to the HDD, so it looks like it's done the catastrophic fail already.
Quite sad, because I had lots recorded that I liked to revisit.

Thank you for your help. How do I obtain a new disk and is it relatively easy to install?

Depends what capacity you want and whether you want new or used.
You can get a 500GB New from Ebay for about £20. Used for less.
Amazon do New 1TB and 2TB for about £50 and £57 respectively.
Let me know if you want sample links - the final decision is your however.

Yes, it's easy as long as you can see, can operate a screwdriver, and are reasonably careful.

All the information you need is here already. HDR-FOX HDD Replacement
I've read through this and would like to know which if the drive specifications are mandatory and which are advised?
I would, if possible, like to use a solid state HDD and I'd like a capacity of 1TB although 500Mb would work as it took me over 10 years to nearly fill up the last drive!
I'm not able to do the drive replacement in the next month or so due to commitments, but would love your feedback/advice so that I can pick this back up when I have the time.

Thank you both BH and prpr for you time, advice and assistance with this.

The original 500GB:
Seagate ST3500312CS Pipeline
or 1TB:
Seagate ST1000VM002 Pipeline
Seagate ST1000VX013 Skyhawk
or 2TB:
Seagate ST2000VM003 Pipeline

The 500GB is probably only on Eb@y or similar these days.
The other Pipelines are getting harder to find anywhere apart from there too as they are older models, although they are available on Ama5on.
Skyhawk are newer but you pay more.

Most people would suggest you don't use an SSD and don't buy a used drive.

The SSD I've been thrashing is still running, so I'm not sure that's the case any more. Certainly when the write guarantee is of the order thousands of terabytes, there seems to be little left to criticise... except they are very expensive per byte.

If you would like to point out where exactly I have not been explicit (insert quotes)...
