The Aura Android update.

Humax do have a track record of supporting products with firmware updates even after the product is no longer on sale, eg HDR-FOX. But perhaps that's the old Humax, before they outsourced the OS to Google and user interface to Freely.

Yes that appears to be the case for the Aura giving it 5 years + 2 years after being discontinued.
Security updates will be provided until November 1, 2027.

Well, my plans to scrap the Aura an implant the HDD into the HDR T2 have now failed as the HDR has finally gone to it's maker!

So, I will keep the Aura a little longer just in case a miracle does happen and it is updated to a stable device 🙏

I am very glad I picked up my bargain BT TV box Pro which is now my only reliable recording device as well as streaming all the content I require.

It seems Humax may have employed a lot of ex car sales persons judging by the hollow promises and misleading information they spout?

Have you posted symptoms in the HDR Fox T2 section so people can try to figure out what the problem is? A number of issues are resolvable.

This is very interesting and I have been doing some research since your post.

I have one question, can you receive the HD channels (BBC1 HD etc.) when connected via the aerial as reviews I have read so far suggest not, but are available when connected to Wi-Fi?

Lots on eBay at good prices and later EE boxes too. I understand that even if I got the cheaper BT box it will still update to the latest EE software, not sure if that is true or not. I thought it would be a cheap option for the bedroom…

Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion and I have not done so as yet.
It seems that the faults are random and intermittent - not switching on or off, failed / truncated recordings etc. When I next try to use it I will make a proper list!

I also did a lot of research and got some conflicting answers so in the end I thought I would take the plunge and find out for myself!

I bought the BT TV box Pro version simply because I thought it was nicer looking with the rounded ends, discrete power on indicator as well as the more visible recording LED. The EE version, which I had previously when I subscribed to BT TV, looks a pretty ugly black "brick" in my opinion and the weird power on indication just looks like a feint blue smudge if you are not directly in front of the unit! I am assured the internals are identical and not dependent on the suppliers badge!

I have always connected the boxes to ethernet and aerial at the same time, which I believe is covered in the initial setup, if you plug the aerial in before you start, as this enables the availability of up to 4 simultaneous recordings. If you choose not to connect the aerial it only gives you a reduced list of programs in the guide as well as only two simultaneous record capabilities I believe, I have not actually tried that mode. You can subsequently change back to the other "twin" mode if you wish but I understand that involves a full factory reset which also formats the HDD so you lose any recordings In the full mode, with aerial, the Freeview Guide lists all the usual stuff including both SD and HD versions of the usual channels 1-5, 101-105, BBC4, BBC3 and all can be viewed and scheduled to record (including all the other mostly junk in the lists!).

The Home page displays all the same things you would get as a BT/EE subscriber but of course some of them will simply produce an error or log-in page which you just use the back button to get out of. All the usual streaming options for Netflix, BBC iPlayer, ITV X, CH 4, CH 5, Prime and others are present and working completely as normal with the relevant sign-in/log-on of course. It certainly covers all my current needs of iPlayer, Netflix, Prime and recording/viewing terrestrial HD channels.

My unit has had at least two software updates, presumably to whatever the latest version happens to be! Of course I suppose there is no guarantee that sometime in the future BT/EE will think about reducing the functionality of boxes not linked to their service but hopefully they are too tied up in sorting out how the forthcoming compulsory adoption of Freely for TV viewing might change things (unfortunately, in my opinion) and how to adapt their set top boxes, with zero recording capabilities, to accommodate this. I just hate adverts!

The only possible hitch is IF you buy a previously used box where the owner had a Netflix account registered you might have difficulty in changing to your own account, if you have one. Luckily my purchase was actually brand new and had never been powered on it seems and it came with a spare remote (?) and it all worked fine for £85 so I thought it was a bargain.

Hope that helps?

Note: Sorry, off topic I know but it was answering a question!

Thank you for such a comprehensive reply.

You have answered all my queries and one which I hadn’t thought about.

For the price they seem like a no brainier, plus we have EE full fibre so if I go for the later model it will match the router too. The router also has the awkwardly implemented light/logo setup.

Thanks.

Thank you for such a comprehensive reply.

You are very welcome. You're probably searching *bay right now :)

True, the EE version will match your router so you will end up with two non-descript ugly boxes in my opinion! :o_O: One is more than enough for me and at least the router "brick" is in my upstairs "man cave", formerly my office, out of sight!

Very true, at least one is in the under stairs cupboard :D

What is posted there is identical to what they briefly posted back in October and may just be in need of updating so you can disagree all you like but the date of Nov 1st 2030 is what Humax are now posting on their https://humaxdirect.co.uk/products/humax-auraez-4k-freely-recorder page.
As expected...............................................

"Thank you for contacting Humax.
I believe the humaxdirect.co.uk website should be up to date and more accurate - "Security updates will be provided until November 1, 2030."
Best Regards, "

As a matter of interest, or not, I have just read a review of the new Aura EZ or whatever they happen to call it this month.

Basically it would seem it is a product released before it has been properly developed and tested, although the reviewer has already had several software updates for the unit - the last one did a full factory reset and wiped all recordings, settings, log-ins and tuning!

Strangely whilst you can pause live TV on a Freely Channel (obviously you can't record on that) BUT you cannot live pause on an aerial provided channel even though those are the ones that you can record - twisted logic!!!!

Sounds like a complete dogs dinner and even worse than the original Aura, if that is possible.

I would deduce that getting an update for the original Aura, to make it a viable recording box, is as likely as salvaging the Titanic to full working order!

Thanks for that info - I have had a quick look at that thread and it seems the EZ has even more problems than the original Aura!

I only provided that link to hopefully avoid extreme disappointment for anyone getting tired of waiting for a useful firmware fix and thinking of "upgrading" the original Aura to this nice new, all singing and dancing version, which seems it would take extreme disappointment to a new level!

I had not really looked for any reviews on the EZ as I was pretty sure it would likely not work as advertised and have long since crossed ANY Humax products off my wish list. I feel cheated with my original Aura box and I wont give them the chance to repeat that!

Indeed. Humax used to make decent products but they appear to be a spent force now. One wonders how many years they have left before going bust.

(Fingers crossed) I haven't had too many problems with the Aura, but those I've had are damned annoying. I'd rather buy a refurbished Aura than an EZ.

The 1800T/2000T would get my vote as the last decent PVR for DTT. Following them each new model seems (to me) to contain more unfixed bugs than the previous model.

Don't they produce home chargers now? If they haven't made a bodge of those they might survive.

It's a shame - nothing actually happening now this thread is back on topic - Oh, wait a minute, is that a notification of an Aura update in my mail?

Sod it, no, I had accidently clicked on the date tab and was seeing things from years ago.

I don't like to mention this but er, um, well............. I think it might be futile hope.
I can assure all the doubters that there is considerable activity going on. When Humax will choose to release the updates is a different matter.
