I get the same, with https and /forum on wifi I get a 404 error. Changing to http I can see all the forums on wifi. Switch to Three mobile broadband and I get the error I posted at the start of this thread, which I think confirms this is not a DNS issue otherwise it would have worked going to a direct IP address.
...so it can't receive SMS regardless of Apple not allowing it. The issue here is that Three hasn't thought of that.
I'm not aware of an app. However I do get messages about the rate when I'm roaming so clearly there is a way for Three to get messages to a data SIM in an iPad, so why can't they do that?
Indeed, bloody idiots. So how does anyone using a data SIM create a login for their Three account?
You'd have to ask Three that. Or is there a user forum for Three you can post a query to?

The answer given there is to talk to Three's customer services team. Whenever I do that they won't do anything for me until I change to a current product, which would cause me to lose my free EU roaming on this data SIM. I'm sure that's the point, and I'm not accepting that. If they had a current product with free EU roaming on a data SIM I might do it, or there was a competing product that offers it I might switch. But I've looked several times and never found one, the networks all seem to think data SIMs will generate vast amounts of data and they can't allow that on a data SIM, but surely that's what the monthly usage cap is for?
I did too, in a Huawei WiFi hotspot device. I'm not sure I'm right about there not being any non-data mobile connection to a SIM on a data-only plan, but it stands to reason that SMS is in the "calls" payload rather than the data payload, because of its history... unless the move to 3/4G has altered that...

Then perhaps it is worth sourcing a cheap dumb phone (perhaps even second hand, or borrowed) to stick the SIM in just to receive a text (if that is possible), since you are essentially trying to game it.
