Trialling 'RT3070' Dongles

Black Hole

May contain traces of nut
I bought two of these, tried the first one and it worked... briefly. I got a connection set up, and then after a few minutes a message popped up on the screen "USB device has encountered an error. Remove the USB to prevent system failure."

It feels warm, so I guess it is exceeding the permitted current.

The second one seems to be OK (so far!). Bloody ugly though!

This is after the first delivery failed to turn up, and I got a refund and re-ordered.

A third didn't work at all, and a fourth did the work for a short time and then get hot with the "encountered an error" message routine.

Heads up: these Chinese-sourced penguin-coloured doobries with adverts all over Amazon and eBay are essentially crap, I have one working out of four tested.

I had to send them back to get a refund, but I would have liked to hang on to one to see what's in it (I might just do that even though the one I'm left with works). I find it difficult to believe they contain genuine RT3070 chips, so it would not surprise me if there is a micro or something pretending to be an RT3070.

Is this really a surprise? Fakes/scams/spams are rife. Finally the Chinese bubble seems to be about to burst and not before time.

Sorry for suggesting that. I genuinely thought it was a useful alternative.
Did you source the 4 penguins from more than one seller?
I notice some listing shows it as having RT3070L, I wonder if that's significant?

Not your fault, I went in with eyes open for trial purposes.

Yes, but I don't think there's any reason to believe they come from more than one supplier!

Is it though? As per the "2TB" (cough) UPD for a fiver, there seems to be enough money in people being too lazy to demand their money back that the scam is worthwhile. I can find no way to report my purchase to eBay as a scam – the seller just refunded without quibble, so as far as eBay is concerned it's case closed.

What's surprising is that the one working unit (out of four) is still working several days later, so they're not total rip-offs. Perhaps they are a genuine attempt to make an RT3070-compatible dongle (to feed the set-top box market) but just not adequately tested or using the consumer as production test (or, cynically, finding they had too great a rejection rate).

Anyway, I'm now trying another "RT3070" dongle which might turn out to be another penguin but in guillemot plumage.

It might be useful for BH to run sudo lsusb -v on all of them (and on a genuine one) on his Linux box, for comparison purposes.

This is a "good" dongle I've been using for some time. Curious the properties don't mention "RT3070" specifically, the driver class must be encoded somewhere (perhaps the "0x3071"?):

An Edimax EW-7711UAn I've marked as "failed" delays the lsusb process but does not appear in the results (I guess it really has failed!).

Does this get us anywhere? It seems the HDR works with "0x3070" and "0x3071".

It is interesting that your Edimax dongle does not work. I have an Edimax EW-7711UTn which does work (see spoiler below). They both have the same vendor id : product id but yours claims to use an Ralink RT2870 whereas mine uses the Ralink RT3070.

It is interesting that your Edimax dongle does not work. I have an Edimax EW-7711UTn which does work (see spoiler below). They both have the same vendor id : product id but yours claims to use an Ralink RT2870 whereas mine uses the Ralink RT3070.

Maybe the description sometimes differ from older and newer Linux distribution.
Then again, maybe not. https://forums.kali.org/showthread....e-Edimax-EW-7711UAN-(Ralink-RT2870-rt2800usb)

Are we to conclude this statement (on the Wiki) is not necessarily correct?:
If ProdID is not "3070", the dongle will not work on HDR-FOX or HD-FOX.

And how do you explain that "050D:8053" appears in the supported list for the 3070 driver, and yet
Belkin - F5D8053 - N
is listed as not working?

There is more to this than currently meets the eye.

Perhaps we should say that if a device is listed in the driver then it may be supported but if not then it will not be supported (unless someone builds a new driver for it).

Regarding the 7711, isn't it possible that Edimax substituted a new device when the RT3070s ran out without changing the USB ID? If their driver was updated to handle the substitute device, it would all look good in-house, but fall apart when exposed to unmodified 3rd-party drivers (eg, rt3070sta.ko).

Perhaps I'll give it another try.
In fact it does work. I think that's a case of leaky DRAM on my part, because the 3070-incompatible dongle I wanted to use on Zen (my Linux box) works but not on a USB extension lead to get it into a suitable location. On the other hand, the Edimax EW-7711USn (which is, frankly, rather bulky for a HDR-FOX anyway) does work on a USB extension, which is (I expect) why I used it on Zen rather than reserving it for HDR-FOX duties.

Perhaps we should say that if a device is listed in the driver then it may be supported but if not then it will not be supported (unless someone builds a new driver for it).
That seems like a statement of the obvious, but if an ID matches the list in the driver, why wouldn't it work? I might be being naive here, but if the dongle gets matched to the wrong driver, it shouldn't work anywhere!
