This suddenly started. The box has the latest CF although I would be surprised if that was it.

Any ideas appreciated

Try cycling through the V-FORMAT button options.

My immediate guess is that's the TV's response to a "green screen" HDCP failure. What happens if you reboot the TV and/or the HDR-FOX?

How funny... power cycling both the Humax and the TV fixed it.

I gather there is a bit of a history of getting video but no sound...

An old SONY TV - 15 years, like mine.
