Using Wifi and Hard Drive via USB Hub

Hello everyone
I am trying to run wifi and a usb hard drive via a USB hub, as other threads on here suggest that this should work. This is so I can install Foxlink.
The wifi dongle works fine when attached to the hub. Unfortunately the hard drive does not - while it works fine when plugged in directly.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Does the hub have its own power supply?

Try a powered hub, or use wired Ethernet, or an Ethernet to WiFi link eg TP-Link TL-WR702N.

I did wonder if that was the issue. The hub isn't powered. Thanks all.
