WebIF Autoshrink

Black Hole

May contain traces of nut
Note: there is another Shrink topic HERE (click).

I've set autoshrink on my Films folder. There's a problem though - with the originals being "deleted" to the recycle bin, my disk is going to fill up before it's finished.

What will happen when the disk is full?

What can I do about it?

I have done that too on my films folder, after I did a few test runs, and all seemed OK, so I have simply bitten the bullet (Ohh I like living on the edge, the view is much nicer?!) and decided to delete the originals!

On a more serious note, you could FTP them to a hard drive (PC?) and then if there are any issues, you have the original?

I'm not worried about the process itself, but I'm not too keen on being the guinea pig for a full disk in the middle of something.

Sorry BH, misunderstood your question!

I thought you were wondering when you could safely delete the original recordings, so you don't have duplicates as well as reducing your drives capacity!

No idea what happens when the disk gets full, I too would also like to know the steps it takes, warnings it gives, or does it simply stop recording right in the middle of the programme?

It may not fail gracefully. The disk filling up hasn't been extensively tested.
Stopping the process is tricky (you need to kill the cron daemon and then the auto job that's already running) so your only recourse may be to remove files from the dustbin as it progresses (FTP them off first if time permits and you want to be cautious)

I think I'll disable autoshrink for the moment.

When deleting something from the bin, does it just get "moved" to the bin?

I think, as far as the normal operation is concerned, the Humax just refuses to make the recording.

Well, I've turned on autoshrink for my films folder again and it doesn't appear to be doing anything despite a reboot. Something I've forgotten?

!!!

It says all my .hmt files are missing!

I will have to fire up my proper PC to check, but I can't imagine why they would all be missing - the list includes recordings I only moved in there this morning.

Can you post the exact error message you're getting in the log so I can work out where it's coming from?

And so on, over and over again.

Can you try webif 0.9.12-8 and see if it fixes the error about missing HMT files?

It auto-updated - and now I have a load of ...shrunk.ts files in [FILMS] and a full disk!

Finished

OK, it's finished the run, and every recording in my [FILMS] folder has been converted to a ...shrunk.ts. Presumably auto-shrink renames the recording to its original name wen it has verified backup in the delete folder, and in my case I had to clear out the delete folder to make disk space - but even files processed later are failing to be renamed. Neither is there the shrunk icon listed with them.

What now?

Neither is there the shrunk icon listed with them.

I've used Auto-shrink successfully on quite a few folders, and I have noticed that the shrunk icons can take a long time to appear - so it looks like it hasn't worked at first glance, but they do appear eventually.

Also I had some folders which seemed at first to have the files in a muddle after Auto-shrinking, and then, without any intervention from me, somehow resolved themselves over time to the correct format and worked fine.

I have no idea how the cleverness works, it just seemed to me that even when I thought it had finished, it hadn't really, and that the processes continue working in the background. I've learned now to set a folder to Auto-shrink and avoid puzzlement and worry by leaving it a couple of days before I look into again :) For me this seems to work out. (Caveat - I don't have undelete installed)
