I realise I am criticising my own suggestion, But I have just realised that the Poundland USB hub detailed is only USB1.1, So it has a max. transfer rate of 12 Mbs
You would be safer with a USB2 Hub which is good for 480 Mbs

I'm lucky that I have my ADSL router on top of the Humax so I can easily see whether the Ethernet is up or not.

Your suggestion is fine for me as I will only use an external drive when I am away from home in which case I would disconnect the hub. Other than that it will just indicate the humax is recording. I don't want to make any use of the front usb.

I have been thinking that one of those usb indicators you can find on the net maye be ok. I will see what maplin have.

Being a new owner of a humax I like to have confirmation that it is recording until I am familiar with it.
