  I seem to remember that after installing the first custom firmware it is then possible to do further upgrades over the network without a usb stick. I can't find the instructions for this - please could somone point me in the right direction?

  Thanks, Luke. WinFF does the job. Easy to use and easy to install. Although I only did one file it looks easy enough to do a list. I think it might be a bit slow but I'm not really bothered with that - just happy to get something that works for me! I'm a little bit curious about the default...

  Thanks for this but having a few problems.... I can't find out how to go a global rename with vista or w7. I'm sure it's simple but cant even find how on google! how do you edit the batch file to avoid the pauses, please?

  The reason I'm looking to the laptop and software rather than the router is because everything else I do with it is fine. I've had 4 different laptops on it with 3 different OSs, surfing is fine, I access iplayer on the hdr through it, using webif seems very robust, even downloading to laptop...

  As far as I know I have one - netgear rangemax DG834PN. Transfering files using explorer is the only thing which causes a problem as far as I can tell. If I use the webif download option its fine.
