Does freeview ever broadcast surround sound on its HD channels? If so I am thinking of dumping freesat, there are so many problems with my box freezing for no obvious reason.

Yes. But there are relatively few programmes which have DD5.1 audio. Dr Who does, some Channel 4 programmes do, nothing on ITV.

The BBC's "Later with Jools Holland" is in DD5.1
http://digiguide.tv listings used to have info. for Freeview programmes that were transmitted in DD5.1, however it was also pretty unreliable
