Seems to be more like a private forum as more than two people can be involved, but it does the job.

That's not a unique feature, but as a private "forum" (participants by invitation only) it is limited by being a single thread.

With the default settings, you will get an email alert when somebody sends you a private message through the Conversation system, or just look at your "Inbox" tab near the top right of the screen. See Newbies' Guide to the Forum (click) for other comments.
