It probably isn't valid. I was under the impression that Controversaries was a US variant spelling (to go along with their mispronunciation of the same!) but it may just be a common spelling error. I've seen this spelling enough in US papers/books to have given me that impression though.
No, that was (add/subtract one) or (add/subtract one and change another) or (change two).
So, you can't just add "s" any more, which was your favourite trick, hence BH's comment.
