Assume v. Presume

I was taking the opportunity to vent my loathing of Mrs Brown's boys.
I'm no fan of Brendan O'Carroll, particularly in this foul-mouthed role. I avoid anything "starring" Ricky Gervais or James Corden. Not my cup-of-tea at all.

I totally agree about obnoxious Corden but although I do not rate his stand up I do think Ricky Gervais did make some good character series, The Office and After life were both good.

They may (or may not) have been. Seeing Ricky Gervais was in them (or, if he wasn't in them, his name was mentioned in write-ups etc.) was enough to put me off.
You should give After Life a try, I am pretty certain you and your wife would enjoy that no matter what your thoughts on Gervais are, a well written often sad real life story that perfectly blends with some comedy elements.

And so it was changed. :roflmao:
You'd have thought Seagate would know better. Ah,

That could explain the poor grasp of English.

There are so many similar examples out there, especially on cookery programmes. (I paraphrase) "No more than eight to ten minutes"; "If you can't get xxx, yyy will do just as well" [to which I say, if it will do just as well, use that in the first place].

But if you can't get yyy, xxx will do just as well.

...yyy being cheaper and more easily available than the snobbish xxx!

What they probably mean is "if you can't get xxx, yyy is almost as good".

No more than eight to ten minutes
Have to say this doesn't bother me. It's a pointless expression though. Either it's no more than eight or it's no more than ten. Oh heck, call it no more than nine and have done with it!

It's just showing off. If you have to import xxx from somewhere exotic at a ridiculous cost, and xxx is as rare as hen's teeth, why bother? yyy is plentiful and much cheaper but the cook has just impressed you with his/her knowledge. Oh no s/he hasn't. (Panto season started early this year :) )
