Appendices and annexes are two different things. There's no such thing as a synonym!

I'm sure, many years ago, various colleagues commented on the use of annex by the MoD. Try as I might to find the evidence in the old reports I still have I can't find any. Appendices everywhere.

In fact "in store" isn't even correct. It's "in the shop" or similar. When did shops become stores? I blame that Markle woman (why not?) for ever creeping Americanisation.

I don't know but it was BM (Before Markle), possibly before she was born (or hatched). The GNCS (Greater Nottingham Co-operative Society - ie. the Coop) was referring to store numbers back in the late 70s and probably earlier.

Shop / store / trading post / depot / warehouse / factors / market all have very subtle differences in meaning. A store is obviously a place that stores things, not necessarily to sell to shoppers, but if it has stock then I don't see why a shop can't be called a store.

I must say I would be disappointed if I went into a shop styling itself as a trading post and they declined my offer of a beaver pelt in return for a sack of beans.

British Home Stores - Last seen nearby in a 70s shopping centre, closed before the City Council decided to pull the centre down and take years doing it. Last heard it was to be replaced with a "green space", an NHS treatment centre and student accommodation (or is that just accommodation now?).
What with BHS, Littlewoods, Woolworths, two Coop department stores, WH Smith, Virgin Records, some HMV stores, and the indoor market vanishing - Nottingham has become a hole.

I'm sure there's nothing un-English about "store", but the Americans use it almost exclusively because, to them, "shop" is short for "workshop" not "shopping". This leads me to wonder where we get "shopping" from – is that an activity carried out in a (work)shop (the work being the process of shopkeeping...)?

Here we are starting see the charity shops that replaced the original shops start to shut but never mind it will give somewhere for more vape shops and Ethnic barbers to set up.
