Assume v. Presume

I'm having a brew now after having done something useful. When I've finished I'm going to do something useful again.

Span is the width of a hand or a Norwegian pop group but defiantly not a bridge. Possibly what a bridge does?

Can we get back to why some people think 'mitigates against' means provides evidence supporting the counter-argument?

Easily done apparently. Personally I have not come across the term 'mitigate against' otherwise I would have thought 'What the hell is that person talking about. That just does not make sense'. Obviously, the perpetrator of the ex[pression has no idea what mitigate means, or they would realise that 'mitigate against' is a nonsense.
