Assume v. Presume

As my dad used to say "it says Kellogg's Corn Flakes on the side of a bus but that doesn't mean you can buy them on board"

What ever happened to adverts on the side of a bus? Don't seem to see them any more.

Also why can't you buy fruit at apple or orange shops?

Dunno where you live then - we have them (although the ones I notice most are on the backs of buses).

I don't think I would buy my fruit from the Apple shop, they all have bytes taken out of them.

Absolutely. Somebody's been barking up the wrong tree. Even in US English "aluminum" breaks the general pattern of "-ium" element suffixes (I had to disregard the iPad spell corrector too).

Like

Molybdenium
Lanthanium
Tantalium
Platinium

Anyway, it's now Aluminum and that's that! End of story! The scientific name supersedes any previous British fads! Aluminium

References please? All I can find is anecdotal evidence of the stupid US spelling.

Or even Brasil Fawlty.
Hang on a mo. We can call Brazil whatever we like. We don't insist that the johnny foreigner abolish their quaint names for England.

And, by extension, we can say assume or presume according to our whim or fancy.

You say assume and I say presume,
You say Mumbai and I say Bombay,
Assume, presume, Mumbai, Bombay,
Let's call the whole thread off!

PS At least the Scots and Welsh got Brasil correct!
