Audio issue following reset

In an attempt to fix some stuttering / hangs, I factory reset my Aura. This has created a new issue. I have a 2.1 speaker system based on the Onkyo htx-22hdx. Only the main unit subwoofer has stopped outputting sound following the Aura reset (not its 2 speakers). I noticed in the release notes displayed after the reset that the menu for audio setup has been redesigned, but I haven't found a combination that plays sound through the subwoofer. Although only the Aura has changed, the subwoofer now won't play sound that originate from the TV either. Any suggestions?

I'd suspect this is a coincidence and not related to the Aura reset.

Most likely that the Onkyo is in a Direct mode that doesn't process the audio to pass low frequencies to the sub.

Read the manuals? Aura and Freeview TV tuners will only have .1 LFE sub data on the rare 5.1 broadcasts on HD channels... otherwise its stereo (MP2/PCM or DD 2.0).

If the AV amp was receiving simple stereo, shouldn't it be sending a low-frequency component to the subwoofer anyway, extracted from the stereo?

Not in Direct mode (and mebbe others that's why one needs to read the manual).

Onkyo specifically mentions the "only LFE channel to sub" in Direct mode for that model device. My memory for my TX-NR515 is too vague to be sure which modes bypass the DSP filtering to the sub and which use it without reading my manual. ;)

I've made sure it's not in Direct mode (but in Stereo, as per p34 of this manual that I'm supposed to have read, which says it outputs to the subwoofer and is for 2.1 setups) and I've played Hollywood films on the Humax iPlayer, and on the TV's own Netflix player (which claim 5.1 output on their Netflix preview) via ARC, and I'm still hearing no noise from the subwoofer. And on the Humax's new audio menu I've tried 'Optical or HDMI ARC up to 5.1)' and 'Home Cinema via HDMI [Aura - Audio Equipment - TV] (up to 7.1)'.

Test tones? Does the sub play then?

Power off every device and unplug from mains for 5 minutes then reconnect /power up.
Any change?

Swap hdmi cables for others. Factory reset the Onkyo?

If the above don't help then it sounds like a coincidental subwoofer amp failure - which for a device with all channel amps in the subwoofer box is I'd have thought less likely than with separates.

Interesting. The test tone button (which the manual doesn't really cover) makes a quiet bit of white noise come out of the left, then right speaker, then when it's the subwoofer's turn, silence as far as I can hear.
