Can't get computer interface (directory on the Broadband network) for Humax to show!

We have had a Humax HDR Fox T2 for some time.

Occasionally it has glitches. But since yesterday we can't get the computer interface (directory on the Broadband network) for the Humax directory to show! This is a problem that has thus lasted way longer than the usual glitches.

Instead the error text on all the network pages that we have tried to access for the Humax computer interface (network) is:
" This page can’t be displayed [etc.]"

None of the network pages for the Humax are showing correctly! :-(
e.g. the Media directory at:
[...] 192.[---.-.---]/browse/?dir=/media/

We have had this problem before on occasion, & normally 1 of the following changes gets the network page showing again. But not with yesterday's & now today's error. No matter how much we refresh the network page, this doesn't bring the network page back. Nor does switching the Humax off & on again! ,-) We have even gone into the Settings but resetting the requisite bits doesn't solve it either.

We are aware that only a few days ago the Humax company auto-downloaded some new features onto the Humax, that dramatically changed the look & features on the Broadband network directory on the Broadband network. Is the company perhaps flowing out some other changes that is causing this problem?

We tend to make most changes (moving files etc.) via the computer interface, so this is a real nuisance.

Connect to the Humax via telnet (see https://wiki.hummy.tv/wiki/Telnet ) and use the fixweb option on the telnet menu followed by upgrade. That should get everything back up and running regardless of the exact underlying cause of your problem.

This assumes you're running Custom Firmware version 3.10. If not, upgrade to this first.

I don't immediately understand what you are driving at (your use of terms is somewhat unconventional), but for information there have not been any Humax firmware updates for a very long time. Nothing you see using a web browser to access the custom firmware web interface (WebIf, as shown here: https://wiki.hummy.tv/wiki/Custom_Firmware_Overview) has anything to do with Humax.

This is not on your "Broadband network". It is your home network. Your confusion is because the box your broadband supplier provided to connect you to a broadband service over your phone line also runs your home network by having a built-in network router. The broadband service only provides your access to the Internet - it is not involved with communications over your home network (by Ethernet or WiFi) at all.

The router is responsible for directing messages from point to point over the network, from the sending device to the destination device. It is needed because each of the Ethernet connections to the router, and the WiFi network, are effectively separate, and without the router knowing which devices (IP Addresses) are on each segment it would not be able to direct messages between the relevant segments. The broadband service is another "device" on your home network (the modem, which handles the signal processing necessary for sending high-speed data over a phone line or fibre optic cable, and which is also built into the broadband company's router). Another job the router does is hand out network (IP) addresses when requested by DHCP (something you will have seen in the HDR-FOX Internet settings - see Configuring IP Address (click)).

You can have a router that doesn't have a broadband modem built in, which either runs a self-contained network, or requires a separate device to provide Internet connectivity. You do not need to use the router your broadband provider sent you (although it is usually most convenient to do so), and in fact I found the BT HomeHub4 so buggy that I am (personally) using my own router+modem.

Nor does switching the Humax off & on again!
Always a good thing to try first, a full reboot often resolves things - but when that doesn't fix it you should also remember that the computer might need rebooting and so might the router. Be aware that just using the remote control handset or the front panel button to put the HDR-FOX into standby and back on again is not enough - the HDR-FOX has to properly reboot, which means being in standby for long enough that the hard disk drive turns off (you can hear it) or using the power switch on the back.

As I said above, this is nothing to do with it. It is simply that the custom firmware has got its knickers in a twist, and the process outlined in post 2 should fix most problems. However, if by some chance you really have been OTAed, then that process has wiped out your custom firmware installation and you will have to restore it using a firmware download and USB installation (like you installed it in the first place). Yes, finding the correct terms is rather difficult, especially if tech-stuff is outside one's professional or hobby interests. (I'd rather refer still to "that box thing on the shelf, with the green light flashing . . . it won't work on the computer screen" - LOL! But sadly, with modern tech all about us, words like "LED", "interface", "network" etc. soon become common use. :-D

In the end it all worked out. And the various Web links were very helpful.
