Hello everyone.

I'm looking to convert my old VHS tapes to digital format and preserve them before they degrade further.

Can anyone share the best methods or tools for VHS to digital conversion?

I've seen options like standalone VHS-to-DVD converters and software-based solutions using capture cards, but I'm not sure which is the most efficient or reliable.

What are the pros and cons of each?

Also, if there are any recommendations for software or hardware that can handle this process without losing too much quality, I’d appreciate it!

Well I never, here it is!

The fact is, I've tried several "video grabbers" – USB dongles with video A/D – but never had much success with them (not least because of my ancient hardware, I expect).

But I do have a Yamada PVR from the analogue TV era, with SCART input, and a VCR with SCART output. The Yamada can record to HDD (or DVD, but that bit isn't working), and it is then possible to transfer the HDD to a PC to read the digitised files.

Being able to do the digitising self-contained, unloads the PC from being tied up – especially as it can only proceed at 1x rate.
