Nope, the disk only spins up once the Humax software starts and initialises the Nexus platform. Interestingly, if you restart the Humax software by hand it power cycles the disk too.

Hard drive is controlled by processor, if you switch of your unit and power it back on again you'll see that you get the 'start system' msg on the display then there will be a short delay before the drive spins up and then off again as the unit goes into power save (off) mode,
