Did you get a government alert about fires?

A few minutes ago I did, it played automatically with voice and text warning about the risks of bonfires,BBQ's etc, I thought it was a scam as the voice was American female.

Thanks for the confirrmation, as I have seen no mention of it on the News I still had a bit of doubt as previous obvious scam calls have often used a female American recorded voice.
 
I was just outside in the 'garden' having a fag and this loud noise made me jump so much that I dropped the fag and set fire to the remains of the so-called grass.
Brings a whole new meaning to the term 'burner phone'.
Don't tolerate American females at all, like Phil the Greek, so it's lucky one wasn't in evidence here.
 
First time I've had one of these alerts, previously my phone was too old. What voice?

I think he's been up Tog Hill.

What's not getting mentioned on the news (perhaps it is in the South region) is that the A31 is still closed. Chaos!

I can't speak for you. I am, because I'm my own boss.
Just to put BH's mind at rest, I was talking about cancer sticks, not anything else. I haven't been anywhere near Tog Hill for years.
What are ciggies called these days then? I don't smoke (and never have, apart from "enforced passively", due to the inconsiderateness of others, now thankfully banned).

That's no joke. One of my ex-colleagues lives in Stourbridge (I guess still does).
 
I nearly made a joke about the other meaning of fag, but decided against it. No idea what they are called now, I don't smoke. I didn't catch that you were joking about smoking and dropping it. The "hope you put it out" wasn't a joke. Given the alarm, I meant it seriously.
 
Can you use a hosepipe to put out a fire if you're in an area with a hosepipe ban? Or will you get a £1000 fine, or whatever it is?
Knowing the madness in this country, probably the latter. I expect you'd be told you should have called the fire brigade, so they can come along and use their hoses, presumably without getting fined, but by the time they got there it would have cost lots more than £1000.
 
Not convinced that this is an effective way off making a PSA. I for one was busy so didn't read the details. I fear those who would do these sort of stupid things would also just not bother reading it.

When we had that test alert from the government a while ago we were warned in advance and there was loads of news coverage before the event but this was totally unexpected, I was in the kitchen watching the news on channel 4 when I heard a woman's voice coming from my sitting room and I thought it was just another scam recording being left on my landline answerphone but it was coming from my mobile which also had a long text message with alert at the top. As I seem to be the only one who also had a voice alert I am wondering if it was due to a phone setting making just alerts in spoken word and text which might explain why the voice was American as any SMS are just text when opened. Right at the end of Channel 4 news just before the weather the news reader very briefly mentioned an alert had been sent to everyone.
