Most of what I watch is on the HD channels. When I do have to step down eg. to watch Astrid in Paris the picture can be rather poor, but E4 is a low bit rate channel so this is expected. I'm only prepared to put up with it for things I really want to watch.

Astrid is on More4 not E4 and neither is on SDN (COM4) or ARQA/B (COM5/6). Both are on D3&4 (PSB2) and that isn't subject to my pixelating problem. (According to digitalbitrate.com the average bitrate for More4 is less than E4 - so the 16-34 ages get a better bitrate on DTT and yet they are the ones supposedly watching by other means. Crazy!)

No it can't be.

Waltham always had problems with one thing or another in the analogue days, but the broadcasters would never admit it.
 
Surely there must be someone on here who has watched HIGABMNFY on U&Dave (Freeview, and NOT JaVue) and can comment on whether they've seen a fine pulsating pixelation when there is text on screen with the orange/red newspaper background (if that makes sense).

You wouldn't. It isn't my screenshot. I added it later to indicate where it's obvious to me. I'd have to do some serious faffing around to get an image.
 
Okay, I've done some faffing about. This isn't the best example - but here is a very short clip from HIGABMNFY - watch the focus on the red newspaper area. It blurs, sharpens, blurs and then sharpens. I've seen this on other channels (esp. Sky News) and it looks like very small squares and repeats the blur, sharp sequence more than once. I used the term pixelate, which is probably wrong.

I was slightly teasing, given that you can't see pulsating pixelation on a still image. I see what you mean, but I guess I've trained my brain to ignore such stuff these days unless specifically looking. Not that I look at these low bit-rate SD channels in the first place, mostly.
More annoying (to me) was the sport interview on East Midlands Today just now where whichever muppet who shot it was continually 'crossing the line'. I bet they haven't the first idea about that.

Not sure what you mean by that - I rarely watch the local news on either channel, except the headlines in the morning on ITV. Chances are it won't be repeated in the 10:30 version.

I can't say that I look for it, but I do find it noticeable especially when the effect carries on longer than the example and is on someone's face. Unfortunately I watch many things on the low bitrate SD channels. 5USA, U&Dave, TPTV and Sky News fairly often. I don't remember seeing the problem on 5USA, have rarely seen it on TPTV, and it's a flipping nuisance on Dave and Sky News.

I forgot which channel Astrid is on. Anyway compared to the HD channels I normally watch the picture is crap, soft as shit. But I like the programme, although the plots have got more far fetched as the series have gone on.
