Health of HDD after fix-disk

Hi folks,

Just got home to find a surprising HDD failure (absolutely no issues at all until today) but got it back up with Fix-disk.

Would appreciate your thoughts on the health of the HDD itself after recovery. I'm no expert but its nowhere near as bad looking as last time I had a failing drive.

Cheers.

Thanks Martin.

No I didn't know there was a fan package, how does that work? It might have something to do with the PS4 sat on top on the Hummy though :-/

The Humax algorithm is to wait until the HDD temperature exceeds 55 C then turn the fan on at full speed. The fan package allows the fan to be run continuously at a lower speed to keep the temperature at a lower value; from memory ours is set at about 50% of full speed and gives an HDD temperature of about 45 C.

I left fan out of my list of recommended packages, but I think I'll add it now.

fan *

As standard, Humax chose to minimise noise over longevity. The internal temperature is assumed from the reporting built into the HDD, and the fan remains off until the temperature gets critical... then it comes on full blast - very audible - and gradually throttles back as the temperature falls. This results in the system temperature oscillating between extremes, and this isn't very good for the HDD (or the system).
fan is one of the early packages, created specifically to address the sudden onset of fan noise, but also the better regulation of cooling is good for longevity. The user sets a constant minimum fan speed (eg 30%) so the fan never turns off (but can increase from that if necessary). Low fan speeds are barely audible (the HDD makes a constant noise anyway), and the constant air flow (if set high enough) prevents the 'turbo' ever kicking in.

Hi again,

So subsequent to my last post I have today for current pending sector and offline uncorrectable sector warnings. To me this suggests I have a failing HDD that I should replace even though many other stats seem to look good. Its a shame but I'd rather get stuff copied off before the complete death I had last time.

In terms of replacement HDD am I still best looking for a Seagate Pipeline advised last time I was in this position? I don't need more than the 2TB I have now.

Disc info is below.

Are you saying it is a Seagate Pipeline that is failing now? How long has it been in there? 11,000 hours doesn't seem very good, is it in warranty? I have had three HDRs running pretty much continuously since 2010-2012, and a fourth that gets turned on and off, all running on their original 500GB disks.

HDR1: Hours 61644 Cycles 3252 Uncorrectable 0
HDR3: Hours 50957 Cycles 3228 Uncorrectable 0
HDR4: Hours 43158 Cycles 2040 Uncorrectable 0

Regarding choosing a replacement, as far as I know there is no better advice than is on the wiki: https://wiki.hummy.tv/wiki/2TB_Disk_Installation_Blog. I think some people have tried Western Digital - do a search for posts.

Yes, its a Pipeline that is failing now. I replaced the original HDD which came with the Hummy in March 2017 with the Pipeline 2TB. That is the one that is failing now. I'm also a bit pissed it hasn't lasted longer. It was an Amazon purchase with no details of warranty. Looking online it looks like the only way I can check warranty is open the Hummy and find its serial number but I guess there is a chance it is?

Check the Seagate web site for warranty details, but of course your contract is with the retailer. I expect you will need the exact product code and serial number at some point.

Thanks. Given I'm no expert you agree this seems to be dying?

Edit: Amazon say their warranty ends at 2 years but its still in warranty with Seagate. I'd never considered that so nice tip. I'm still going to need a new drive to copy the old files onto though so I guess the warranty replacement will end up as a backup.

You can get the serial number from the WebIf. You don't need to look at the physical disk label.

There are a few worrying things, but it's not beyond help... yet.
I don't like those off-line uncorrectables
A run of Fix-disk will probably get rid of those again.

The ST2000VM003 is now end-of-life, although still seems to be available from Amazon.
The replacement seems to be the ST2000VX003, which itself appears to have been superseded by the ST2000VX008. The latter is cheaper than the VM003.

what happened to HDR2 ?

Interesting.
One of Yours has about 40k hrs and 3k cycles

Mine about the same usage but 10k cycles .

Both drives have done stellar service

This last one kinda completes the variations and largely says that no matter how many times it's cycled on/off or how long in use the drives can cope very well

I don't know why my cycle counts are so high - they seem to average about 1 per day, when actually they are left on all the time and just rebooted to clear occasional problems. Is anyone aware of a regular housekeeping operation?

Thanks prpr and everyone.

I've had some more offline uncorrectables develop and am now at 232. These seemed to come after the HDD stalled on playback/fast forward then recovered.

What I'd like to do is immediately install a new drive and put the old drive in my caddy to copy across to the new, but that has to wait until the new drive arrives. For now I'd like to back the recordings on the drive as I've got several 1TB externals going spare here. They are in NTFS. Am I right there is no particular barrier to me doing this as I am on the custom firmware? Do I though need the NTFS-3g package to do that though?

Would you suggest running Fix-disk as well as writing off the drive? I'm geting quite nervous to do anything with it to be honest. For extra info after Fix-Disk recovered my drive when I ran it I then had a number of recording become unusable as "incompatible format" - mainly now deleted. Should I have rerun fix-disk to try and recover these?

Has anyone tried those newer drives and know they are as compatible with the T2?
