Help/Advice...Screen message displayed permanently on both Channels, i.e. ITV 1 HD (103) & Channel 4 HD (104).

Help/advice please, (potentially).

Hello hummy community.....

As of 2 days ago when ever I selected Channel 103 (ITV 1 HD) or Channel 104 (Channel 4 HD) the transmitted programme is viewable for approximately 30 seconds and is then replaced by a black screen showing the message "To view this service please connect your device to the Internet". This remains displayed until a channel change is actioned. Although the channel is not viewable when the message is displayed the respective channel audio is still heard. If I change channel to any other station and then back to either 103 or 104 the same thing happens. This only ever occurs on selecting Channels 103 and 104.

I have tried a full auto retune but this has made no difference. Only Channel 103 (ITV 1 HD) and Channel 104 (Channel 4 HD) are affected by this weird anomaly. Every other Freeview channel is displaying as it should.
My Humax has never been connected to the internet since purchased so it's weird, (to me), as the message implies both these 2 channels require internet connection. Never had this in all the years I've owned this Humax device.

Immediate update:

P.S. Ironically prior to completing this post I checked that the problem still exists and low and behold the Humax appears to be back to normal operating status, Channels 103 and 104 displaying as normal with no spurious message. I guess my request for help/advice is now no longer required.

Hope I am not out of order, but I have still posted this, (my 1st post on hummy.tv), to see if the issue is known, and if a similar issue has occurred with any other users. I'm assuming it could have been a local Transmitter problem (Winter Hill- Lancashire), and not a Humax fault at all ?

If you the forum admin' deem it appropriate to delete this post then please do, but thanks for reading anyway.

Regards Geoff.

The first thing I would have done is reboot it, but that might not have altered anything. Strange things do happen on broadcast services from time to time.

Was this also you Geoff? If so why are you posting in the HDR FOX T2 forum? If not it suggests the issue may not be caused by Humax as it happened on different models. (Taken from My Humax Forum).

"Hi all. My trusty HDR-1800T has been throwing up a message on Ch103 ITV1 HD … but only when watching the News at Ten !!

To view this service please connect your device to the internet << on a BLACK screen

Will attempt to post a screen shot.

Started this week only … any ideas please ?? The sound continues and if I select guide, the picture stays good in preview box !! All very weird.

Not happening on my older FOXSAT HDR in the spare room …

Cheers. BRgds"

Hi,

Same here on both 103 and 104, just happened now on 103 after watching the football with no issue for 2 hours! Also on Winter Hill and doesn't seem to affect any other channels.

Reboot didn't fix it and it seems to happen between 10 and 11 pm.

Could they be working on the transmitter?

Steven

Possible engineering work being carried out this week?

Hello trog. Thanks for your reply, and no, this wasn't me but I hadn't seen that Forum posting and it is interesting as it is the same or similar issue that I have. Further to my post I can confirm that as far as I can make out I only have the issue during evening viewing ! it appears perfectly fine during the morning and afternoon. I'm thinking that it must be a transmission issue from my local mast...Winter Hill, which I have a visible line of sight too from my location. Either that or it's some weird atmospheric disturbance, (if that's at all feasible).

Same here, only 103 and 104 between 10pm and 11pm. Seems to have coincided with the barb message appearing with the press yellow to opt out. TVs not affected so it's likely only people who watch TV using the PVR will notice. Seems like other makes of STB are also affected.

If you record the channel it plays back ok, so only affects watching live broadcast.

If you pause the channel for 10 seconds, then press play, it will view as normal just delayed slightly, (temporary?) work around.

This may be the thin edge of the wedge so I think it needs as many people to complain to as many places as possible. Suggestions welcome. I guess the Freeview and ITV sites will be a good start.

Thanks guys for all your replies. I guess the issue is (must be), associated with Winter Hill and maintenance perhaps as you state. Good to see that it's not just my Humax that's playing up. Hope it gets fixed soon.

I checked on myhumax.org and got the solution. Rewind a touch then stop for live broadcast.
Must be a new glitch between the pvr and hd transmission
🤪

Not associated with any particular transmitter (I'm on Hannington). This is likely a change that has been made to the transmission. It might get fixed if enough people complain.

Similar has been reported on AVForums... and DigitalSpy via users (with a TV, in each case)?

Also other reports of a BARB survey particiapation popup that can be cleared / opted out of vie the Yellow button on some TV channels (ITV1 HD for me on various TVs, but not my HDR-Fox-T2).

I'd suggest trying the R G Y B teletext buttons, in turn, to exit the MHEG/HbbTV app or even an <eXit> button next time it happens.

It's (sort of) how IPTV channels are directed from their LCNs, and how Freely TVs should go when TV reception is poor on to the iPTV stream.

Maybe they are trying to AdServe or send to the correct Local TV News (I get Meridian rather than the correct Anglia on HD here)?? Who knows.

Equally likely is it's a <male chicken>-up in their Cloud Playout?

COMPLAIN to ITV https://www.itv.com/terms/articles/viewerservices#_need-more-help
and Channel 4 https://www.channel4.com/4viewers/contact-us
and Freeview https://www.freeview.co.uk/help/who-to-contact-support

There's been a history of ITV/4 problems on the D3&4 multiplex for Aura users. Maybe ITV/4 are spreading the <spherical objects>-up to a wider audience, i.e.. BBCB and many devices.
ITV/4 appears to be the common factor. What a bunch of...!

Thanks for all the replies and tips etc, glad it's not just my box!

Mine isn't permanently connected to the Internet, what would happen if it was?

Thanks GeoffRh for the original post and all the helpful replies.

I have been experiencing this problem on ITV1 (103) but have not seen it on CH4 (104). Your post is most helpful as I could not tell if the message was from the Humax or the Samsung TV (S95C). I was suspecting an HDMI sync issue.

Like others when the problem occurs on my system the sound carries on and a short skip back restores the picture.

I am on the Malvern transmitter a Sutton Coldfield relay.

A very odd problem hopefully caused by the maintenance work.

Certainly NOT a transmitter-related issue. Possible, but unlikely to be in C&M as all (English) regions are affected --- no reports from NI, Wales or Scotland that I've seen (so far) - but they may also be affected.

It'll most likely be in the stream from ITV playout which has moved to the Cloud, recently (DigitalSpy tells me).

None of mine are either.
I think I've seen one channel (possibly Great TV) that if it even sniffs an internet connection tries to play over the internet instead of off-air. The delay between switching to the channel and it actually playing makes me think it's bust again. If ITV/4 are aiming for that I'm likely to keep the disconnection permanent. Unless you can switch to pause immediately you change to one of the channels that may be affected and use a delayed playback technique, you might be stuffed. I found with the channel I just mentioned I couldn't pause quick enough. You could always record everything - until they screw that up as well. (There were problems playing recordings on the Aura-currently solved).
Maybe it's a one-off problem and nothing to worry about. Was that a pig I saw flying past?
