Humax FHR-6000T Will this need its own listing in the forum? ( Now named the Aura EZ 4K Freely Recorder)

A company learning by its mistakes when they were still selling and the have a monopoly, hmm let me think. Its probably no more than a re-boxed Aura with Freely.

I still stand by my opinion the current Aura's update will be the Aura EZ although I think it will probably be with Freely stripped out.

They will see if the EZ has any major issues and if not roll it out to the Aura, hense the delay.

But will they back pedal and give us an Android 12 update instead of the Android 14 that was promised to match the EZ or will the EZ get an update to Android 14? This would make better sense as its competitor the Pleo Freely box was released months ago with Android 14 OS. One thing that does not seem to be mentioned much is what are the app capabilities of the EZ. The Aura had limitations, will it be the same?

What specific benefits does Android 14 vs 12 provide to a Freeview and/or Freely box? This is a device with nothing like the complexity of a mobile phone.

You keep using the word “promise” where did they say that?

They (or just some CS bod) may have stated it was Android 14 but I doubt they “promised”. They stated to me in an e-mail 3 years ago after I purchased the Aura an update was imminent to fix the issues. It was repeated many times on the phone over the years and we all know what happened, nothing.

It seems to me the likes of yt-dl would be the most likely approach, with a team of enthusiasts cracking the access mechanisms at the server, and running on a general purpose computer rather than confined to running in a locked-down environment like an STB.
You are correct, and it has already been done for some services. Something like yt-dl is used to fetch a file. That's the easy part.

Not entirely true, we do intercept some things in the HDR Fox T2. Wasn't there a way of saving the last thing played with BBC iPlayer, when it still worked?
You call that "intercept"? It's another access to data on disk. Android won't let you do that, unless you can root it.

I keep forgetting that, and I'm always falling foul of that restriction on the Aura!
Therefore scrub my thoughts that someone could create an app to record internet streams. Probably only Humax could do that for the new Freely Aura. They won't.

My first impression is that I'll be sending this back.

Match resolution has similar issues as above which is 1080-4k but 60 Hz only.

So useless for UK broadcast and Freely.

That plus refresh rate switching not supporting 50 Hz is a deal-breaker for me.

Other first impressions...

The integration of terrestrial, recording, and catch-up via Freeview Play is more seamless on my TV than it is here on the Humax.

I just need to find a USB "hard drive" that my LG supports and I'll also be able to do live rewind (can use flash for recording but not live play and pause).

Freely either doesn't do that, or crashed when I tried.

That said, there's nothing wrong with the value of this Aura EZ box.
2TB for shade under 250 quid is a good value proposition. Compare that to the Samsung T7 drive that would be £149 to £250 if I wanted 1TB/2TB or about 60% if willing to accept second hand

It is Android box. I think Kodi probably installable.. I'll look

Wow. This is buggy. Just pressing info or pause brings up an error. And then even low bitrate stuff like One foot in the Grave is stuttering mess and cutting out.

And blocking artefacts all over the place. It's like watching Hbb TV through a broken aerial.

60 Hz UK television

And it's not difficult to see that it's not taken native resolution either anyway.

So refresh "low" targets 60Hz always
Refresh "medium" targets either 50/60
And refresh "High" targeted 24/25/60

(And then ignores the 50i and 50p material and 1080 setting and sends as 4k/60 anyway even if everything set to auto. See comment below about a/ad button which gui and manual mentions but not on the remote)

So as I said useless for UK users.

And don't get me started on freely "watch live". so far only way to start is to restart which takes you into iPlayerb/ 4 player etc at beginning of the programme. The show is there, the progress is for live, but there's no maximise image and clicking the image does nothing

The volume bug still there. Even after pairing with TV the volume operating some internal volume.

Based on that although there's Dolby digital Plus, that volume is being tweaked make me think it's not true passthrough but will be resampled. (Android tends to use 48Hz which is fine for most film content but not music)

.

I've programmed my Sofabaton X2 with Humax aura (original) which controls the box admirably..so think that confirms at least the IR chip set.

there is no s/ad button mentioned in the GUI to manually override on original remote

The s/ad button on the Sofabaton configuration doesn't do anything

No PlayStore that I can find.
No streaming apps, so no Now TV, Disney+, Netflix, etc.

I found the menu for allow unknown sources, but it's pre-populated with the Humax app manager (not PlayStore)

Can't even find a place to enable side load. How was it done on the original Aura? No browser which would be the usual method to get a downloader installed if not already

On the Aura you click on Apps it then shows your installed apps and a "download your apps" option to click with a logo and Google Play above it then scrolling down to the bottom it says "Find more apps and games" with a button that says go to play store.
