Humax FVP-5000T Crashing on Playback

Hi all I have an FVP 500T with a fair few programmes recorded, probably 75% full. When I am playing recordings, I think at the same time as a live recording is taking place I get a message saying the channel is scrambled / unavailable. Then it cuts back to live TV. If you go back in recordings everything disappears and it says there aren't any recordings. A hard reset will resolve the issue, pulling the power and reinstating it. However it will then happen again a few days later. Is there anything I can do without a factory reset that will lose all the recordings?

Hello - just wondering if you found a solution to this problem in the end, or if anyone else knows of a solution? I have experienced the same issue as above - a message appears saying the channel is scrambled/unavailable when playing recordings, and it cuts back to live tv.

Any help would be gratefully received!

As an educated stab in the dark, this sounds like the unit sometimes loses track of its encryption key. A reboot reinstates it. Whether anythign can be done to stop it doing that is anybody's guess, but probably not.

Thank you for replying. Just to be clear so that I know what to try, when you say "reboot", what do you mean?

That looks like a better cause than any I can think up. I was wondering about whether it was all recordings or a specific channel/time etc. A reboot probably wouldn't clear such problems.

What I would mean by a reboot for the 5000T would be turn to standby using the remote. Wait an age for the disk operations to stop, disconnect from the mains, wait a short while, plug back in and wait for the Humax to boot, possibly need to bring out of standby and then see what happens. BH may mean something else.

I would have expected "reboot" to be fairly self-explanatory.
A hard reset will resolve the issue, pulling the power and reinstating it.
ie, the good ol' "have you tried turning it off and on again" – which doesn't mean stand-by unless it's in stand-by long enough to complete the shut-down process and turn itself off (if it ever does).

The point is that all the start-up processes have to be gone through, rather than some kind of quick-start. Usually there will be a manufacturer's splash screen displayed on the TV when it is booting.

On rare occasions I've known one of my Humaxes recover from some minor error by going in and out of standby. Which one and what error currently escapes me.

It's interesting that you were wondering whether it was all recordings or a specific channel/time etc, that hadn't occurred to me. I would need to check it again but so far it has happened when watching things on Channel 4 and E4.

Thanks for clarifying - I always power it down completely and turn it off at the wall but don't actually disconnect it from the mains so could try that as well. I will see if it happens again and report back.

In my experience it doesn't take that long to complete the shut down process and turn itself off - maybe 30 seconds or something? Anyway, yes, I will check again by making sure it is definitely shut down, unplugged at the wall etc and fully rebooted, and see if that makes a difference.

unplugged at the wall
What exactly do you expect that to achieve if you've already turned if off on the switch?
You could always take it out of the room/house, walk it down the road to somewhere non-specific and then reverse it all. What would that achieve?

My fault (maybe), I use the term unplug rather than switch off at the socket: a) I have to unplug from an extension socket because the switch is far way and hidden, b) it's a simpler explanation. Switch off could be confused with the off button on the remote or box top. Nothing's easy!

The tip?

Yes, exactly this.

But he said "I always power it down completely and turn it off at the wall but don't actually disconnect it from the mains".
Pretty clear I think. Disconnecting it from the mains when you have turned it off at the wall is pointless.
I'm surprised there wasn't a "leave it unplugged for 10 minutes" in there too, to let the inductors discharge and the magnetism in the capacitors repel any local magnets.
