Is my HDD doomed?

After having blocky, stuttering recordings for the 3rd time since Xmas, I didn't fancy yet another format of my HDD. I've installed the customs hardware and run the diagnostics.

I'm running maintenance mode as I type, but my question is: with the results below (pre MM fixing), is my HDD doomed anyway?

And if so, is there a list of good HDD replacements I can slot in? (I'm out of warranty - purchased November 2010)

is my HDD doomed anyway?

The lines that show problems are :-

5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct PO--CK 1192 071 071 036 Pre-fail Always -
197 Current_Pending_Sector -O--C- 2 100 100 000 Old_age Always -
198 Offline_Uncorrectable ----C- 2 100 100 000 Old_age Offline -

NOTE :- Line 190 is not a problem as it is not supported on the Humax.

Relocated Sectors = 1192 is high and Current_Pending_Sector = 2, Offline_Uncorrectable = 2 are not good, but I wouldn't say the HDD is necessarily Doomed. If the HDD comes through the fix-disk O.K. you would need to monitor line 5 for 1192 increasing significantly and lines 197 - 198 going above zero, if this happens, I would say the HDD is looking doomed

Thanks for the speedy response!

So, assuming that things do indeed go downhill, what are my options? Can I just buy a new HDD, slot it in, let the Humax format it and away I go?
And are there any recommended brands or specifications I should go for?

One other question: my long test has about another hour to go and I'd quite like to go to bed - can I leave it running overnight?

Yes, not a problem

Yes, as long as the new drive is no bigger than 1TB the Humax will format it for you, a 2TB is possible, BUT it must be formatted outside the Humax or by using Custom Firmware. Not sure about recommendations for HDD model number, I will have a look around

Brian replaced like for like e.g. the Seagate Pipeline HD 5900.2 model ST3500312CS, not sure where he got it from, but here are a couple I found on Ebay link HERE and Amazon link HERE

I changed my original 500GB HDD to a 1TB (Western Digital AV WD10EVDS). It is very quiet and runs cool.

It is also designed for PVR use, not the 'bog standard' drive you would have in a PC.

Not sure what the difference is, but I thought I had better get one designed for the job rather than an 'ordinary PC HDD'.

Having just bought a second HDR (500GB), I tried to buy another WD10EVDS but found them hard to get hold of. I managed to get a WD10EURS 1TB.

For the record, I have a WD10EVDS 1TB in my Topfield 5810, fitted at the same time as my Hummy. Both must have been in for about 2 years give or take. Both still show A1, no reallocated sectors etc.... so I can recommend them.

The difference is the type of duty they are optimised for. PCs require fast random access in bursts, PVRs need slow steady block transfers over long periods of time. Either will function in either setting, just not at its best.

These look bad as well.
is my HDD doomed anyway?
Yes.

Thanks for all the advice. My tests all completed and the Hummy is running again, but clearly it's not going to get better. So I've invested in a replacement Seagate 500GB HDD as per the link above and I'll look at how I slot that in in the next few weeks.

Have you gone green yet? If you are opening your box to fit a new HDD, it would be the ideal time to remove the Orange filter from your display. You should be able to do both in well under an hour.;)

Well I've gone green - that was the easy part!

Armed with my Seagate Pipeline HD 2, I've attempted to install it into the HDR. But it can't see the drive! The disk management menu is greyed out so I can't format it within the Humax. The cables are firmly seated.

It was in exFAT formate (whatever that is) and I tried formatting it to NTFS, which didn't help either. I'm trying again with EXT3. Is there anything else I'm doing wrong?

I'm wondering if the problem is the Seagate Pipeline HD 2, does that mean it is a SATA II drive that requires a link to be fitted to force it to work as SATA I?
