Jump to home

A curious follow on from my previous Crash Crash Crash post.
Now my box has decided to keep jumping to the Home page! Again no particular cause, watching iplayer, watching a recorded program - not sure if it has done while watching live TV yet.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Yes do a factory reset but don,t connect to internet is the only way to get the machine to behave as recording device. But you loose apps, search and the various i channel i players. But then use something like a firestick to fill the gap.

So when people are talking about switching off wifi that includes Ethernet?
I guess most users don't go to the trouble of connecting an Ethernet cable and only use WiFi, being as the unit has WiFi built in. If these woes are triggered by the Aura being able to "phone home", whether that be via WiFi or Ethernet is irrelevant.

What's the connection with being able to phone home?

Come to that, I thought it needed a connection to get the EPG, schedule update etc.?

What? Why?? Don't you realise the EPG (including revisions and now/next info) is included in the DVB-T signal?

"Phone home" is a euphemism for making contact with the server over the Internet. It seems to be the on-line stuff that is causing malfunctions.

As BH says above.
I've always thought of "phone home" in this context to mean where your Humax checks for updates. Originally with older models there used to be a check of the broadcast "engineering channel" to see if there was a software update. That's gone. Newer models will be checking a website for updates. For all we know it may be passing some usage data and other information back to Humax as well.
I can't say for certain that the "on-line stuff" is causing problems. All I can say is that my Aura is only connected to the internet when I want, and certainly not overnight. I haven't had as many problems as others. Whether that is cause and effect - who knows?

ok, I'll give that a try, see if that fixes any problems. It makes streaming slightly less convenient, I can stream direct from phone via apps to TV (not as easy as using the EPG) although it does mean the Aura app will no longer work which is a shame - quite useful if I'm away from home and realise there is something worth recording which isn't available to stream.
From the sound of it, this is the future if they're going to turn off the RF signal. Although I don't see how that is progress, there are all sorts of films etc. on either during the day or occasionally overnight which are worth watching but not available to stream, I'm not sure how most people are supposed to be able to watch them. It'll be partly like going back to my childhood, life before VHS, although there was nothing on during the day or overnight then to watch anyway! No doubt they're trying to push us all on to paid for services, although I can't help feel they'll push many away to youtube etc.. But no doubt that discussion has already been had on another forum.

Perhaps somebody enterprising can use Wireshark to see what's going on, and then use firewall rules to stop unwanted traffic but keep the useful / non-buggy traffic.

Not in my case. I have always had my Aura connected to the internet via a cable but with WiFi always disabled, I prefer all my equipment to he hard wired and the only thing I enable WiFi for is my mobile phone as I only pay for a tiny amount of data in my phone package as I use my home internet for any updates and downloads. . I also have Bluetooth disabled on everything.

If you have Ethernet and WiFi enabled on the Aura it will default to the WiFi.
Do you have Bluetooth off on the Aura remote??

The Aura does not need to be connected to the internet to 'get' the EPG, although full programme information may not be available.
The search function requires an internet connection.

Just to clarify. The internet connection will default to WiFi, but if the ethernet is also connected via a switch or router to a PC, that PC can access the Aura over the wired connection. Useful because I can't get FTP to work from a PC to Aura over WiFi.

That is an annoying feature. Why you can't search the EPG without the internet is beyond me. Previous models had no problem. Manual searching the EPG is a pain in the...

That appears to be pretty standard these days. The Manhattan and EE/BT TV boxes (in aerial mode), also insist on an internet connection for the search to work.

Wouldn't surprise me if the reasoning behind that is so your search information is passed back to whoever so you get a "if you liked that, we think you'd like this" message. Before long "they" will know everything about you.

The EE/BT TV box and their predecessors since 2017 have sent details of everything that is done on the box back home.
Also if you use those boxes without an internet connection, if a reset is ever needed it first requires a working internet connection. At that point it obviously opens an opportunity for accumulated info to be sent home before it proceeds with the reset.
