Wouldn't surprise me if the reasoning behind that is so your search information is passed back to whoever so you get a "if you liked that, we think you'd like this" message. Before long "they" will know everything about you.
Bit like being on forums like this.
We are watching you.
Especially you.

It might be. I'm sure I've had a pop up, on one of the rare internet connections, on the Aura inviting me to pass information to BARB. Maybe it was a bad dream.
Not a dream. I had that happen once too and declined.

I assume turning off internet access is the reason I've lost program thumnbails on programs recorded since I disabled?

Certainly the channel ID thumbnails disappear.
Large background pictures and extended summaries for recorded items will also vanish.Thumbnails for TV programmes on the recordings page (alternative version, not list) should be available. I have a generic thumbnail for radio programmes.

The thumbnail on the actual recording whicy typically seemed to show a frame from a few mins into the program is no longer displaying - well, until I've started playing the program at which point it reappears.

On older Humax PVRs, thumbnails are extracted from the recorded content only when the recording gets played or during pre-shutdown housekeeping.

Ah, that seems to have been a temporary thing, now the unit has been rebooted after turning off internet acces the thumbnails have started appearing again.

I spoke too soon, it's erratic, sometimes it shows a useful thumbnail, sometimes it shows the channel thumbnail and sometimes nothing.

I have the problem that, when disconnected from the internet, the true thumbnail is replaced by some text. But sometimes it is blank, even on main channels.
