Local network access setup + DLNA?

Hi guys

I've had my HDR-1000S for about a week and I am very pleased with it.
However when I connect it to my local internet router through my home network it seems to set itself up automatically. I cannot find any way of manually altering the network settings. I don't want it to use the IP address it has chosen and I need to provide it with a password so that it can connect into my homegroup. It connects to the internet with no problem, but my PC cannot see it because it is not part of the same workgroup/homegroup! So how do I access TV recordings stored in it from my PC? And how do you configure the DLNA server so that network media devices can access the saved TV programmes?

I emailed Humax support and a chap called Conor replied to me within an hour. But he simply said that there is no manual network setup menu available. This doesn't make sense, the Humax doesn't know if it is clashing with existing network devices and if it can't become part of your home domain how can you possible do network sharing of the files in it!

Does anyone have any thoughts on how this should work. I'm sure that somewhere on the packaging it mentions DLNA, but I cannot find any menus to configure this, but I guess it must be hiding somewhere!

thanks for any suggestions

DLNA is a user-config-less protocol. DLNA-capable servers announce their presence when a DLNA client broadcasts a request on the network. The device will be allocated an IP address each boot by a DHCP request to the router, it need not be the same each time because of the request-response DLNA mechanism. It is all designed so the non-techie user doesn't get involved.

In order to access the files from a PC, you need DLNA tools. UPnP Inspector will show you what's there, and an up-to-date VLC can be a client/player.

For general info, look up the abbreviations in my Glossary (see links below); there is also info about VLC etc in the HD- and HDR-FOX sections of the forum. Note that on an HDR-FOX there is a menu option to turn the DLNA server on.

The reason why you cannot see your HDR-1000S on your Windows network it does not have a network share and you cannot access your recordings over the network anyway.
It is not possible to connect to your homegroup (Used by MS only I believe).

As yet, there is no DLNA server. It does have a DLNA client however.
