"BBC has a bold new plan to turn iPlayer into the home of British television – and it involves opening the platform up to other broadcasters, pulling its own content back from other services, and trying something that looks a lot like what BritBox was supposed to be."

are you attracted to naked Ant & Dec on the why aye player.
Haddaway man, I can just about tolerate them on "Get me out of here" but avoid anything else they do but I bet you would like both of them naked or not to take you up the Tyne.

If other services were to come to iPlayer, and that's a big if, wouldn't the other services require a similar encryption to they have on their own players? That could render get_iplayer and yt-dl unusable for downloading BBC content. Try getting BBC programmes from the BBC Studios owned U.

I use get_iplayer for some radio programmes I like to catch up with while on the road (Sounds is not good for this) so perhaps if they do introduce encryption across the board for TV programmes then radio content will not be affected.

BBC iPlayer is miles better than any of the commercial catch up services. Being able to skip the pre-show punditry and go straight to kick off for live sports being one example and I would hope ITV and C4 etc leverage that functionality for their own content though I accept that would still mean allowing several minutes of ads to run before getting to the good stuff.

I would expect encryption to be high on the BBC's reasons to contemplate this idea as is taking those "U" channels away from Freeview/ Freely? both to try and force people to use a system that they can police better than "Buy a licence or we might knock on your door". Is Brit Box encrypted?

Of course, if the BBC is contemplating/forced into abandoning the TV licence and ending up with a subscription model then encryption would be necessary. Not subscribed - no access to iPlayer. If the BBC wants everything on iPlayer why have they allowed U (BBC Studios) programmes to be present on Channel 4 streaming? U & 4 are both encrypted - but are decrypted by your app or browser for free if you have subscribed (currently free).

BritBox no longer exists for UK viewers. In any case it was/(is for international viewers) a subscription service - so likely to be encrypted.
