Well I'm having more problems than I did before I set out to run the custom firmware. Its been a little while since I used the Humax TV Portal, but there has been quite a few things that have changed to muddy the waters since then.

I have installed the custom firmware, and I have had two router firmware upgrades since then, and now I've changed the hard disk.

It is possible that my Humax has been able to at least once access sites outside my router, because just after I attempted to install the WebIF software using a USB stick*, it did briefly download the package list but said the web interface had already been installed, I visited the Custom Firmware webpage** because I hadn't realised that the USB method had worked correctly, because I was expecting a prompt either on the TV or the front panel, but nothing seemed to happen.

Today after reading this thread I've tried accessing the TV Portal but nothing is happening other than the Web Portal message on the Humax display.

Back in June for one day I got a strange error saying "Humax STB Only!", resetting the box made no difference but the next day it was all back to normal.

That was a weird Humax problem - at their end - so you must have had access at that point.

You do not expect to see anything on the TV when the CF is installed, and all you get on the front panel display (VFD) is a boot-time announcement of the version of CF installed in Flash via USB. It's all fully explained here:

Hi Black Hole,

I got exactly what I expected when I installed the custom firmware, it was exactly as documented, although I had no idea what the standby button was, but assumed it must be the centre of the ring, which turned out to be correct.

No what I mean was it was the installation of the WebIF interface via USB that I thought I had read would show something on the panel. I have managed on the old hard disk to load the WebIF via stick

I'm very confused by my router pages at the moment, the trouble is I didn't look at them when it was working so I don't know what is different.

I have the following

The Humax system information tells me that it does have a MAC Address, but it is not listed in the routers pages, the internet settings give the same gateway address as IPCONFIG does on windows
192.168.1.1, and the Net Mask is 255.255.255.0, and under DNS it lists the same number as the gateway (192.168.1.1)

I've tried setting it to manual, both with an IP in the DHCP range of the router and outside, and the Humax connected each time, but it makes no difference to the problem.

Well I've no idea what is different between now and last time with the old hard disk. The WebIF interface will not install from USB, it does indeed create a log. but nothing works I still get the 'Custom Firmware Successfully Installed!' webpage with the yellow 'Download & Install the Full Web Interface' message.

The only difference between this time and last time is there was no fake successfull attempt to start installing the WebIF interface followed by any its already installed messages.

Fiddling with address reservation etc has caused it to now always want 192.168.1.8 intead of 10, but that can hardly be the problem. I've also tried old history pages from when it successfully ran, changing the IP accordingly.

Not sure why but I noticed that the humax changed IP again back to .10, some of the bull settings I put in the Humax network menu, seemed to stick when I went back to asking for DHCP, so I manually entered all the settings using the correct gateway and the .8 address, but when I then went back to DHCP it then assigned .10.

I am now getting the WebIf interface, I also noticed that the Humax seemed to be stuck and not responding the remote and so I used the telnet session to force a Humax reboot. I thought I would try the web page one more time, and this time it connected.

If set to DHCP the assigned address can vary unless you have set your router to give its MAC address a fixed IP address. (Don't do it on the router AND use a manual static on the T2 though.)
Just as a matter of interest, I have mine manually set to 192.168.0.200 (above the router's DHCP pool) because my Nexus 10 keeps forgetting where the T2 should be so I have to connect that using its IP address.
You should have really stuck to your own thread, but as it happens, not too much of a problem as the OP's problem has now gone away.
Stick to this one now.

Regarding your command line blundering, I think you are over-estimating the number of Linux commands available in the Humax stripped-down OS!

I had no idea what the standby button was, but assumed it must be the centre of the ring, which turned out to be correct.

? How could you not know that? And besides, there is also a standby button on the remote control handset. See Things Every... (click) section 18.

But does the CF install using the RCH Stby on thr T2? IIRC you have to use the front panel button on the Foxsat, otherwise it doesn't work.

So you've never seen a user guide then? Is the concept of "standby" unknown to you?

Anyway, to quote from the instructions (reproduced in my Guide from Humax info):

4. Place the product into standby mode (using the STANDBY button on the remote control or the STANDBY button on the front of the product)

The reason I'm being picky is your apparent lack of attention to detail. That's probably what's behind your various difficulties.

I didn't overestimate the number of Linux commands available in the Humax stripped-down OS because the thread implied that those commands would work. I have no idea what Linux commands are available, becuase I don't actually use Linux.

To diagnose what's going on here, you need to get on to the Humax command line via telnet (see http://wiki.hummy.tv/wiki/Telnet )

Once you get to the telnet menu, choose the 'cli' option and then type this at the prompt:

tcpping hpkg.tv 80

Well that definitely looks like your Humax can't talk to the package server.

I follow that link, starting at item 4

4. Some people have reported it doesn't work in the front or rear USB port (the rear port is almost un-noticed under the Ethernet socket). If one doesn't work, try the other.
5. Usually, all you actually need to do to start the update process is to reboot the box (by any means) with the USB stick plugged in. Just click it in and out of stand-by with the front panel pad (allow 30 secs for a proper shut-down, the internal HDD will click when it turns off and then it's OK to start up).
6. If it takes, you will immediately see a "firmware download in progress" screen. You can remove the USB stick when the status changes from "downloading" to "programming". Don't worry about pauses. Make sure you remove the stick before you reboot when the update is completed, otherwise you will have to sit through the whole process again

Your being more than picky as there is nothing wrong with my attention to detail. As I followed the above instructions and did what they said. As I said in my previous message, the commands I tried are listed on page 1 of this thread. So you are quite unjustified in saying the problem is my reading comprehension, I followed what it said

Well I've no idea what is different between now and last time with the old hard disk. The WebIF interface will not install from USB, it does indeed create a log. but nothing works I still get the 'Custom Firmware Successfully Installed!' webpage with the yellow 'Download & Install the Full Web Interface' message.

Did you restart the Humax after installing the bundle? You need to do that before the web interface will appear.

Ah right, that makes sense, the box seemed to freeze up and not respond to the remote so I used Telnet to cause it to reboot, and after that I was able to view the web interface. The same sort of thing happened with the new hard disk, the Humax needed to be booted up with a working hard drive, it wasn't enough just to format it. The PVR started being able to record the moment I finished formatting the disk, but it was only once I rebooted that I was able to visit the initial custom firmware web install webpage.
