Recommend Me a Router

The update process was pretty neat, only problem being the updating screen never terminated the "please wait" spinner and eventually I refreshed the screen manually.

Oh dear. If the 3700 was on the list, and if I could be persuaded to click on a dodgy link, somebody might be able to tweak the router to open a port and get blocked by my PC's firewall.
That's what I thought as well BH.
Strange about the spinner though. Mine 6400 'just did it' and as far as I remember, when I upgraded firmware on your 3700, I had no problem like that. But it was quiet a long time ago.

But it was quiet a long time ago.
In a less noisy age, no doubt.

The spinner problem could be iOS/Safari. I have had similar problems with file uploads on this forum (but we now have progress bars instead - yippee!).

I got an update (v1.0.0.56) a week or two ago for my D6400. Release notes say"Fixed the security issue about Security Advisory VU 582384". Released about Christmas time. Is that the one that you were referring to Mike?
THIS talks about it and the 3700 is not specifically mentioned.
And I get the response "The 192.168.0.1 page isn’t working" to the command "http://192.168.0.1/cgi-bin/;COMMAND"
Another test is:
Test your router with

http://1.2.3.4/cgi-bin/;reboot

where 1.2.3.4 is the LAN side IP address of your router. Yes, there is a semi-colon just before "reboot." If this reboots the router, it is vulnerable.
That's the one, you are safe for now!

It's much worse than that. Your PC is least of your worries, it's the router the crackers want to take over.

There is a stealth test at grc.com, shields up, perfectly safe to try. It helps you to discover any ports your router has opened and left open.

Yes, but it's a bugger to find and start running. Never come across a test that is so difficult to find how to run it.

I agree, but there is a claim somewhere that it has to be reset by going to the home page before each run. Not sure how that works.

For those who are new to it, scroll down to the link to Shields Up. On the next page, which displays your IP address or possibly a domain name, click Proceed. On the next page, click All Service Ports and finally, away it goes!

Glad I came here! Just scanned mine and found some fifty closed but not stealthed ports. (I swapped one router for another recently.) The router firewalls were turned off by default. I have turned on the ipv4 one but haven't a clue how to configure the ipv6 one. Fortunately, my ISP hasn't enabled it yet.

Good god - Gibson Research: that's a blast from the past.

I don't think I'll be losing any sleep over that!

Nah, I did a factory reset on it before I started. I might come back for some advice on firewall settings.

Strange. I ran the test and there were a lot of 'blues', not surprisingly perhaps.
So I turned on the stealth mode (after some digging around to find out how) and ran the test again. Now all green, except for 6 blues. 5 at 135-139 and 1 at 113. I think I'll still be able to sleep at night, but it seems a bit weird.

Edit. Oh, weirder still. My router has a separate filter specifically to block netbios ... on ports 137-139. Gaagghh! WTF?

Mike, if you click on the squares, you should get info about what protocols they support. It really needs to be all green! I set my router firewall to reject all connection attempts from the LAN, all protocols, all ports.

What would you prefer - "so what?"? That was the point of it. Wherever it may appear to be, that's not where I am.

As I said, the objective is first to take over your router. Your PC firewall only protects your PC!

As BH's primary objective was to stop freeloaders using his bandwidth, there would be little point in letting them set up a netbot on his router. Also, just think what else they could do with full control of every request he makes to the internet. Redirect web pages and searches? Download porn? Use the router to hack other sites?
