Black Hole

May contain traces of nut
This probably isn't original thought, but it occurred to me this morning that we now have Star Trek communicators in the form of mobile phones, and the electronic clip boards Kirk's underlings presented him reports on (in the form of the iPad or other touch-screen tablet), and of course sliding doors are two a penny on the high street.

All we need now are tricorders, transporters, and warp drive.

And for af123 to add a level 4 diagnostic to the webif. Oh, and some way to eject the warp core when the EPG fails to refresh.

[the U.S.S. Enterprise is being sucked into a Black Hole, seconds away from doom]
Scotty: I'm giving her all she's got, Captain!
[the bridge ceiling begins to crack as the ship's drawn closer]
James T. Kirk: All she's got isn't good enough! What else ya got?
Scotty: Um... Okay, if we eject the core and detonate, the blast could be enough to push us away! I cannae promise anything, though!
[the viewing window starts to rupture]
James T. Kirk: DO IT, DO IT, DO IT!

I guess when af123 releases the version of SysMon which looks at CPU load someone will eventually have to say "she cannae go any faster" - and at some point af will get a suggestion for the CF and have to say "dammit Jim I'm a doctor programmer, not a miracle worker"

I would rather af123 'came up with' a replicator. That way I can have my very own Cameron Diaz! Sod the "Tea, Earl Grey, hot..."

I do like the idea of an "eject core" button. Now, whatever happened to that dishwasher interface...

(By the way, having ejected the warp core and detonated it, however did they get home? Impulse engines?? Scotty pulling on a rope???)

Lets face it - at the time when we all first watched it, the best inventions on Star Trek were the female uniforms and the green skinned belly dancer!!

My employers have just decided that all the corridors around our government built rabbit warren need a fire door half way down each section of corridor, as well as the ones at the ends that have been there for years. I'm sure we'll appreciate the extra doors when there is eventually a fire, but for the mean time these conventionally opening doors go 'swish' each time you open them, just like the sliding doors on the Enterprise, due to the smoke stop brush mounted around the edge of the door.

maybe it helps that we happen to build instruments for satellites there as well ...

It's no good if you don't have scene-shifters hiding behind each one to open them for you (glad to be of service)!

Can't believe I googled this but hey this is the Hummy Arms...and isn't this kind of guff what the internet was invented for (or was it free porn?)

[nerd]
Yes it would have been impulse engines. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impulse_drive is apparently not the same as warp drive http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warp_drive and driven by some sort of nuclear reactor versus the Warp Core which unsurprisingly looks after Warp drive once you've gone faster than Impulse Drive (sub-light and faster than light I think).

But but... impulse engines would have taken several lifetimes (a normal rocket is an impulse engine, "impulse" being the Physics term for the propulsion you get by chucking mass in the opposite direction by conservation of momentum) - never mind Voyager being stuck in the Delta Quadrant, Kirk would have been stranded in our back yard.

Wait a minute, he probably teleported a defused photon torpedo into a passing Romulan battleship and cannibalised it for parts when they all abandoned ship.

Damn you Sky!

Anyone with a couple of spare dilithium crystals and 14 grammes of common sense would be able to regenerate a warp core before breakfast.

Well anyone that knew the f******g radio still worked would've got Uhura to call in for some help from someone who still had their Warp Core firmly seated in their Warp Core Slot!!!!! :D:D:D

And everyone knows you can't beat having a Warp Core firmly seated in your Warp Core Slot
