Subtitles not visible!

Phil, you (and Jack Hawkins...) may have shed a ray of light! I hadn't heard of VLC, just d'loaded it, ran the above .ts file, tweaked the sub-menus and got:

Hurrah! The laptop travels with me and I've got a long HDMI (lo-tech solution) cable!! Time to dig out the old USB HD!!

(ps I've added some edits to my previous post, answering some queries)

To be honest, I was going to suggest you play the recordings on a laptop or tablet but I didn't know whether they might have been part of your travel plan. At a pinch you can watch on the laptop. I wouldn't call an HDMI cable a low-tech solution.

May I refer you both to.........................................

Could he not just use a laptop connected to the TV when there, put all content onto laptop or a connected SSD here and play with VLC and simple drag and drop any needed subtitles from one of the many free subtitle sites.

.............................................. Surely a little bit of kudos is due :)

KUDOS!! - missed this, didn't know what VLC was and can't be ar$ed with subtitle sites. But essentially you had the solution - many thanks!! 👍🥃🥃

ar$ed with subtitle sites.
If you ever find you need to be arsed it could not be simpler with VLC, Just start to play the movie or tv show with VLC after you have downloaded the subs file which takes seconds and then just drag and drop it onto the open screen, it does everything for you and syncs in time even if you are part way through watching.

VLC is the one media player you can trust to do everything.
Except on the Aura, where it sometimes gets itself in a tangle. (Strange that the same version isn't a problem on Android phone or tablet)

Saw the "free subtitle sites" and sort of missed the rest. Why use subtitle sites when the recordings should contain the subtitles - I thought?

On a PC. On other platforms various restrictions apply, often corporate stuff. I never had much success with the iPad version years ago because of the constraints Apple imposed for it to be on the app store.

This may not work with Hi Def recordings since they're encrypted. Unless the 5000T downscales and decrypts them on copy to USB. @EEPhil do you know what happens?

Snap, especially as that was written as key component of the suggestion.

HiDef files are NOT decrypted. The Foxy solution which also worked on the 2000T WILL NOT WORK on the 5000T. I posted a solution here, but I suggest no one reads it - it is far too complicated.

IWas there a MyHumax FAQ were it stated that they were decrypted and compressed if samba was used, but if FTA is used they remain encrypted?
The FAQ I am thinking of was from years ago and therefore not an Aura FAQ.

Pity you did not have the sense to point that out at the time isn't it if the suggestion was a perfect fit without the need to use a subtitle site.
Maybe not exactly your point but:

Very next post:
That would depend on what the OP is recording. Not all subtitles are available on websites. Also if you've recorded something (a film maybe) from a commercial channel complete with adverts, then you get the subtitles on-line without an ad break and possibly at 24fps or 30fps it's going to be a complete mess. I know, I've tried getting English subtitles for foreign films. Even if I get foreign subtitles and translate them if the FPS are wrong it's a nightmare.
At that point noone knew AyrtomH took a laptop to the other place so VLC playing of a recording was not an option.

I, and I suspect Luke, were trying to work with the information supplied by the OP. If that information had changed immediately following your first post maybe we would have got to an answer sooner.

However, it's not been a waste of time. I have now found a way to hardcode subtitles for those pesky foreign films!

As others suggested he bought a different Humax PVR and even take a PVR out there it is certainly not unreasonable to suggest he take a laptop which he quite likely already had. Also you both knew that a 5000T would transfer his content to a laptop with the subtitles intact and playable with VLC ( I have no knowledge of the 5000T or have ever had the need to put Humax recordings onto a laptop) but rather than mention that very relevant fact at the time when I posted you both mention it now and only as a way to criticise what I had posted after AyrtomH had already declared that the laptop option was the ideal solution. I expect that sort of thing from this sites serial nit pickers who get off on finding fault it other people posts but please do not join that bitter little club, you are better than than Phil.

Edit. I have just added a ? to my number 33 post to prevent others from not realising that "Could he not" was me asking if my suggestion was possible rather than me stating a fact.

This is hummy.tv, people here can argue about who helped the most and why the solution wasn't found sooner for months! :)
And I thought we were here to help, not massage people's egos. If AyrtomH has a workable solution to the problem, job done. A solution was found. I really couldn't care who wants to claim credit.

Exactly my view. But there seems to be a discussion about who helped when. Not that @trog will see this comment since I believe he has me in his Ignore list.

Nor do I care, there was a reason why a :) was in my post however I do care when certain people will find any excuse to repeatedly find fault in something I post and often what others post rather than add something constructive or politely pointing out an error and no I not aiming this at you. Anyone who frequently uses this site will know what I am talking about. Grudges on this site have no shelf life and once marked you will always be a target to some.

As the thread is still open, may I add one bit of information?
I have now confirmed that VLC will play and show subtitles on both .ts files copied directly from the back of the 5000T onto USB, and .mpeg files downloaded from the Humax onto the laptop via the wifi network connection - both were programmes previously recorded onto the 5000T HD.
Thank you to all members for your contributions here - gentlemen, I have achieved what I came here for a scant week ago. Thanks again.
