Telnet not connecting in Maintenance mode

Well, trying to fix my disk problems, loaded custom firmware, used telnet to connect to Hummy and put into mainteneance mode, all good. But when I reopen the telnet session it fails to connect "can't open port 23". Any ideas? Oh, and box had frozen - had to power off at mains to restart. Checked portal and internet connection ok...
 
Although I get the maintenance menu in the telnet session, as after restart I couldn't connect I tried fix-disk direct from the command line but that didn't work either. What a pian to get so far then fail :-(
 
How is your HDR-Fox connected to your network? There is no WiFi support in maintenance mode. Best to connect to your router using an ethernet cable. This is only necessary while in this mode.

I see in another thread that your disk is reporting as failed. I doubt if the fixdisk routine will be able to correct a disk in this condition. I think it is time to copy your recordings on to a USB hard drive, as you suspected, and replace the internal disk. If you post the results of the 'Smart disk' tests (in Web-if under diagnostics) I sure that someone could confirm this for you.
 
And yes I intend as soon as I get the external drive to copy the recordingd off and 1) reformat the internal HDD (this fixed the same problem 2 yrs ago and b) source a sutable replacement internal disck/

Ethernet should be fine, just make sure that you use the IP address that is shown on the display of the HDR-FOX when you start up in maintenance mode, and use 0000 as the password if requested. You may be flogging a dead horse though: please see my previous post.
 
We crossed posts again! Your reallocated sector count is >6000 (entry no. 5): your disk is in God's waiting room, I'm afraid. No point in running fixdisk, I would copy your recordings and replace:(

You can reformat the internal drive after copying your files, but this will not fix the reallocated sector count. It may solve the problem for a while, but the disk could fail any time.

Could you point me in the right direction, please. I have the standard packages such as wireless helper installed, but for maintenance mode I have always temporarily used an ethernet WiFi bridge instead of a dongle as it is not convenient for me to use a direct ethernet connection.
 
I was going to go further and ask "what packages"? I've seen reference to them a couple of times, but not seen where they are nor how to install them.

You might also need to set

WebIF >> Settings >> Advanced Settings >> Show development and advanced packages? = Yes

(it defaults to "No" on installation to screen naive users from the nuts & bolts and anything they are best advised not to play with)
 
Ah ok, I saw the list of downlods when the WebIF first installed, but assumed they were "installed" by default - but clearly not. Ty.
 
The downloads were installed - they provide the "standard" functionality and there are a load more that are optional which will download and install when required.
