I think you are clutching at straws there, more likely the effort was intended for the EZ and they hoped it would be backward compatible and could also be used on the Aura but for whatever reason it could not and rather than admit defeat they have just left us all hanging.

Can't be true. Aura is Android based and Freeview. EZ, if I understand correctly, isn't Android and isn't Freeview. Totally different.
Ok but is it beyond the realms of possibility that the Aura EZ was originally going to be Android and Freeview and have far more in common with an Aura ? It would explain why they used the Aura name again for the EZ on a box that now has no resemblance in looks and a totally different operating system. Something changed along the way and they then rushed out the
we now see as the EZ and abandoned working on an updated Android system that would also have benefitted existing Aura owners. Of course this is pure speculation but it is no less plausible than Martin's Lazarus prediction.

If the EZ isn't running on Android, what is it running on? It's not likely to have a bespoke OS, not these days.
