...and the first one works, now on a soak test.

To follow up on this: I had a guillemot (out of 4 IIRC) fail on soak, and it was replaced by UKClearanceCentre on return.

Still with the Lan connected I tried the new WiFi dongle, but a scan via the Web IF found just four WiFi networks (2.4GHz) none of which is ours (see pic). The Humax itself had the WiFi settings option greyed-out.

Have now disconnected Lan and will investigate further shortly after one of two recordings ends since I had a freeze/auto-restart when trying to select a third channel to watch (after the can't-change-channel warning appeared). The same circumstances as "meltdown Tuesday" (https://hummy.tv/forum/threads/two-problems-while-trialling-cf-1-03-12-on-hdr-fox-t2.11098/)

I believe you can't have WiFi and Lan at the same time, only one or the other.
I think so. Certainly unplugging the Lan connection brings the Humax's WiFi settings to life. But again, scanning for networks only finds a few. Tried entering network name (of the form "BTHub6-ABCD") manually, setting security to WPA2-PSK (Smart Hub calls it just "WPA2") and entering password (upper/lower case and numerals only) but attempts to connect time-out and change the Lan IP address to the default 192.0.2.100. Will investigate further tomorrow.

What channel is your WiFi on ? IIRC the Humax won't connect or show the network name SSID if the channel is set to 4 or below.

Which WiFi Dongle?

There are a few to choose from including Humax's own, It has been reported that to work with the Humax, dongles must have the RALINK 3070 chipset.

NOTES

  • It has been reported that channels 1 to 4 can't be used on with the Humax, this is due to configuration setting, they can be enabled by setting CountryRegion=31 in file/etc/Wireless/RT2870STA/RT2870STA.dat

Does that setting enable 1-4 in addition to the existing (eg) 5-12, or move the range to 1-4 only?

No idea, never tried it. I was quoting the wiki. I guess if you find out what "CountryRegion=31" means... (which I imagine specifies the permitted frequency range).

Just noticed some WiFi dongles available on Ebay, but the budget black ones are now starting from £12.

I've an RT3070 that looks like one of those. It has a bright blue light that is made worse by its flashing. If I recall correctly its ability to pick up a Wi-Fi signal as OK but not the best, despite being far superior than the puny Humax branded equivalent.
