Update from android 9 to 14 - problem

A few days ago I updated my aura set top box to Android 14. But find that quite a lot of channels just show a blank black screen.

The only way to get the channels to work mostly is to put it back to standby and power on again.

I’ve tried everything I can think off. Unplugged from the power source for 6 hours didn’t work, tried another HDMI connection (went from 2 to 3)

Tried a new cable.

Does anyone know if there a fix in the pipeline ?

I updated my Aura on Tuesday the version of the software installed was 1.00.57.
Amongst other problems changing channel to blank screens was also happening, changing to another channel and back again would sort that out for me.
However on Wednesday Humax released another update which would install version 1.00.59.
Since then I have not had a problem with blank screens when changing channel.
If you have not installed this version, connect to the internet and go to Settings> Device Preferences> About and see if the update is available.

Thank you for your reply. I’ve just checked as you suggested and there isn’t another update on offer. Would you know how I can check which installed version I am running ?

Thank you so much

I’ve checked and unfortunately I am on 01.00.59 which as you say is the latest version. I’m still stuck with certain channels showing a black screen ever since upgrading to android 14.

Has anyone reported these problems back to Humax? It's odd that after over a year of testing something as simple as this is broken - at least for some. I'm sure if Martin had this problem he would have said something to Humax. Are there multiple versions of the hardware out there and they haven't all been tested? Has the wrong software been released? Looks like the usual SNAFU.

Try a full power cycle again.
Long press on the power button (remote), when you see you see the Power off screen press OK.
Wait a couple of minutes for the HDD to save info and spin down.
Unplug.
After a few minutes plug in.
The box will start up, blue LED.
Make sure it goes through the full boot up routine.
Humax logo, Android start up screen, it will go blank for as much as a minute then you should see the white rotating circle
as the Humax operating system loads.

Once up and running try changing channel.

If channels are still blank when changing try Automatic Channel Search.

No further forward you could try a Freeview Reset.

Settings> Freeview Play Preferences> Freeview Reset.
Read what it says.

You may want to back up your preferences before the reset, Backup User Preferences.
You can use Import User Preferences after the reset.

Some might say that Backing up and then Importing the User Preferences could be importing
the bug or fault that is causing your issue again.
In that case you would make a note of any user preferences and your recording schedule before
performing the reset or take pictures of the screen.

If a Freeview Reset has not improved things you may want to consider a Factory Reset. (last resort).
Settings> Freeview Preferences> Factory Reset.
Please read what it says, you will have to make notes on your settings, schedule, and apps you have installed
Use only this path for the Factory Reset as this will preserve your recordings.
Other Resets in other Aura menus can actually lose access your recordings.

A Factory Reset is very much a last resort, it may be prudent to wait a few more days to see if Humax
have further updates in the pipeline.
After years of waiting last Friday 1.00.57 came out and then 1.00.59 arrived on Wednesday so maybe just maybe something else is lurking in the shadows.

Thank you for giving me a lot more options.

I’ve tried a 6 hour disconnect.

I’ll wait until Monday now to see if Humax comes up with a fix, if nothing by Monday then I’ll run through all your suggestions.

It’s a pity that Humax didn’t properly test the effect it has on aura after an android 14 upgrade.

Ever since the Aura was launched 6 years ago it has been fairly problematic with many bugs and irritations.
Prior to these updates the last major update was in August 2021.
That 2021 update improved the Auras functionality greatly but did leave a few areas unimproved.
There was no information forthcoming from Humax about any resolution to these problems.
In October 2024 rumours started circulating in Humax forums such as this that an update would be made available
perhaps in the early months of 2025 but nothing happened. And so it went on like that until
unexpectedly without any notice the update arrived on Friday last week.
Humax have still not updated their Humax Support Aura Software page which still shows information in regard to the 2021 update.

Before Android 14 update I was getting a black screen on all channels (info screen still displayed) happening sporadically after using other Apps like Youtube and returning to freeview, a long power reset fixed it for a while.
After the Updates it was cured and before I did a Factory reset (done for the other issues and suggested by Humax support).
I wonder if there was a memory leak in the software eventually messing up certain features and the long power reset cleared it (A shorter power down was less effective).
I used to leave it unplugged over night for best results.

I am still trying to work out why users on the same device's are getting such varying results, is it locality, as the TV issues seem to prevail.
I am in SW London and could see the transmitter from the roof top I think it was Crystal Palace according to my Aerial fitter .

Be careful with resets I tried a few some years back and managed to wipe my recordings and Schedule, however Factory did not , I asked the Humax support to confirm.
Factory Reset needs allot of work after, re-adding Apps and settings and Accounts so have all you settings at hand to get it back to normal.

One version of reset gives the appearance of wiping your files, but doesn't- it hides them, and (obviously) they take up space. You can't access them or delete them by "normal means". I managed to access them and copy to a pc. I had to format the disk to delete them. Whether that is possible with the updated software - who knows?
