Ways to repair or time to replace? - Solved

This is the first time I have installed the custom firmware. Do you mean it is an old version of one of the files in a stock installation? It is quite an old machine. If it is a package only installed by the custom firmware is there a clean way to remove it and re run the install?

To see if it is an old installation I type "cli" to go to a full terminal and tried "opkg list-installed" and got :
humax# opkg list-installed
anacron - 2.3-1
at - 3.1.18
auto-unprotect - 1.0.6
bash - 4.2
busybox - 1.20.2-1
cifs - 2.6.18
cron-daemon - 1.18.3-4
epg - 1.2.7

hmt - 2.0.10
id3v2 - 0.1.11-1
inotify-tools - 3.14

jim-binary - 0.76
jim-cgi - 0.7-1
jim-oo - 0.77
jim-pack - 0.71
jim-sqlite3 - 0.77-1
libpcre - 8.37-1
libxconv - 1.0.1
lighttpd - 1.4.39-1
lsof - 4.87
mediatomb - 0.11.0r2-3
mongoose - 3.0-7
nicesplice - 1.1
openssl-command - 1.0.0.d
rs - 0.4.2
samba - 2.2.12-3
service-control - 2.5
sqlite3 - 3.7.6
ssmtp - 2.64
swapper - 1.0.1
tcpfix - 1.0.0

virtual-disk - 1.1
webif-channelicons - 1.1.25
wireless-helper - 1.0.0

I could try removing rs and then re-running "opkg install webif --force-reinstall". Or would that do irrepairable damage?

So where did the machine come from? Second hand from somebody who had previously installed it?
You've got a whole load of ancient stuff on there. It didn't get there by itself...

From the telnet menu, choose the reset option which will clean everything out for you.

No I bought it brand new from Richer Sounds. Although having said that I got one from Richer Sounds and when I got it home the case was badly cracked. I took it back and exchanged it for another brand new unit. Or at least I thought I had. Maybe I was given a reconditioned unit? I thought I was buying brand new.

The initial install of the "full web interface" did work through quite a few packages before falling over at the "rs" package. Is there a way to go back to a factory setup? (without losing all the recordings?)

I'm afraid you've been had. That's somebody's returned unit. Bit late to complain now.

One of the on screen menus will do this (I forget where, but it's fairly obvious), but do NOT format the disk (otherwise you will lose the recordings). You'll then get the initial setup/tune menus.
Do as af123 instructed to reset the custom firmware environment. Then you can reinstall the WebIf.

Brilliant thanks guys. The reset did the job and the full web interface installed succesfully, hurrah. Rather miffed about being sold a returned unit but as you say prpr, far too late to complain now. This seems to happen quite a lot. My dad bought a digibox a little while ago and I pointed out it looked reconditioned, especially as someone had written with byro inside the user manual a password for the box :/

However... It does look like there are HDD issues. Rather than being presented with all the nice icons I get a big red box saying :

!! WARNING !!

There are potential hardware problems with the internal hard disk on this device.

Disk overall health assessment is: Unknown

Go to disk diagnostics

I clicked on the "go to diagnostics" and there are several read errors. Is there a handy way of getting all that info on here for you guys to see?

I've used the "upload a file" button to upload a zip of the .htm and directory that accompanies it in a .zip but its not immediately clear where the file has been placed or how to link to it for everyone. So in lieu of that the info is below ("attributes" lines 197 and 198 are highlighted orange) :

Code:

Disk offline sector count is: 2

See post #2 !!!

(You have two bad sectors which need fixing. Then you need to keep an eye on it.)

That disk has been powered on for 10352 hours in total but apart from those sectors it looks ok.

I have to go out but I'll eave the box running as so far recovery seems to be ticking along nicely...

Please select option: fixdisk

If you were sold it as brand new and it isn't, there is no statute of limitations on liability. However, you would then be minus an HDR-FOX. Richer Sounds offer an amazingly good returns policy, now we know why.

I have been logging serial numbers for this kind of event, but nothing has been reported for a while: https://hummy.tv/forum/threads/humax-faults-v-serial-number.688/

Apologies Black Hole, I have altered the fixdisk output listing in the previous post.
Also I have checked the list of returned devices but none match my box. I will add a post to that thread with my box details.

But the SMART data suggest a bit over one year of continuous running; something isn't right.
My guess is that it is a 15 bit counter which has wrapped around. auto-unprotect v1.0.6 was current between December 2011 and April 2012 so that would limit the time the OP had the box. It is probably somewhere in the right ball park.
